Happy Mother’s Day!
I thought it would be fun to share some memories of your mom, memories that you have as a mom yourself, of someone that is/was like a mom to you. That means all of you so just spill it ok? Either share it here or on your own blog, that’s fine with me. I just want to celebrate the many special ways moms rock!
Memories of my mom: When I was a teen, my mom and I joined a health club together. That summer we’d go every afternoon. We’d stay in the ‘ladies only’ section because she simply wouldn’t venture over to the bigger equipment where the grunting guys were because, as she put it: “Who wants to build ‘muscley’ legs?”
We’d start by riding the stationary bikes then I’d get off to run on the indoor track for a few laps while she supposedly continued to cycle.
Now, in this particular club, being very she she poo poo in a gaudy 80’s sort of way, part of the track went through a tunnel where members were treated to a neon light show accented with pulsing techno-funk music.
Each lap, when I’d emerge from the tunnel and pass by the ladies section, there would sit my mom, on her bike, but not peddling. Just picking her nails, surveying the scenery, not sure what, but definitely not peddling…until she spotted me, Then she’d laugh and get going, only to stop again I’m sure, as soon as I dropped from sight. I realize now how she loathed going to that club, but she sucked it up and went every single day. With me.
I knew I’d ‘arrived’ as a mommy when: I was at the YMCA with Things 1 and 2, then ages 4 and < 1yr. Thing 1 was taking swimming lessons as I entertained Thing 2 in my lap with Teddy Grahams. Suddenly through the window I noticed Thing 1 was doing a vigorous potty dance. At that exact moment Thing 2 dumped the entire box of Teddy grahams on the floor. Not sure what I did with Thing 2 but I belly crawled to corral as many teddies as I could before charging with Thing 2 under my arm in a football hold, pushing her stroller (my purse, etc was in it) through the locker room to get Thing 1 into a stall, peel off her wet suit and to the potty, all before the floodgates opened, so to speak.
Thanks to everyone for your sweet, supportive comments earlier this week regarding my friend Olga and her family. I am especially thinking of her and her beautiful angel Heidi this Mother’s Day.

I definitely believe Moms have super powers! You DO rock!
Back in 2007 I won a radio station contest for a trip for 2 to London. Hubs was a good sport and let me take my Mom since she had never been out of the country! We had the time of our lives that week and it is definitely my favorite memory. Hopefully we can do it again some day.

Ok, I see that Marlene is the only one that can follow directions by spilling something mom-related, so her and I score major brownie points for the next give-away. Don't forget!
Let's see….being "old" I could venture down a thousand years of memories both of my mom and of being a mom, but since I'm in year #22 having lost my mom, I'll a special moment about her and I. I didn't get to spend a lot of my life with her; she died from the dreaded lung cancer when I was only 25, but the moments which were very special to me where when we'd got to my grandmother's house in NE Iowa (Lansing, to be specific). My grandma lived out in the country, a community of about 20, with a one-room school house where my mom attended school from K-8 (one classroomo from K-8!! I thought they did that in the "pioneer days" hahah). Every spring we'd go to my grandma's house and walk over to the old abandoned schoolhouse and pick wildflowers. Not the stems, but we'd dig up the entire plants and replant them back home in Davenport(Ladyslippers were my favorite). These quiet times alone with my mom were priceless and ones I will carry in my heart forever. I always miss her so much this time of year.
I totally loved your story about your mom at the gym. My mom didn't do the gym, she bought dounts everyday. I think that's why I have a fetish now for sugar!
Happy Mother's Day, Sweetie!! Big hugs!!

I love your story about you and your mom at the gym together! So funny. And you go mama–way to pull it all together!
My mom was never athletic and still doesn't like to break a sweat. However, in so many other ways, she's the strongest woman I know.

That's a great story about your mom and you at the gym! So, your workout habits come from way back. ๐
One of my favorite memories is walking into my Mom's house on my wedding day and finding a white summer dress that she made (and that fit perfectly), a white sun hat and a pair of white shoes waiting for me. It was a complete surprise! I was going to wear a blue dress to the very simple, very small brunch that was my wedding! It was the best day of my life! (This is really true, I promise!) Moms are just awesome!!
(I missed the the post about your friend Olga and Heidi. I'm so sorry for Olga, her family and her friends, including you, and my thoughts and prayers are with all of you!)

Happy Mama's Day!
On my end, w/my mom, we've become closer after me having my own lil' ones. She is the best Grandma, and I count my blessings having her in my/the kids' lives;-)
Meg says
Happy Mother's Day, Marcia. I remember my mom living in the garden and sharing all of her experience and knowledge with me. She always said that it was more fun to have a nice garden than a clean house. I have always loved that!

Per chance did the YMCA have a CCTV system because I would love to see that on tape.

Happy Mother's Day! Cute story about you and your mom at the gym!
One of my favorite memories with my mom wasn't that long ago. When I had my daughter I wasn't planning on having my mom in the room, but at the last second I chickened out and NEEDED her there so she stayed. After I delivered and had Maggie laying on my chest I looked up and my mom was looking at me the exact same way as I was looking at my new daughter. She said, "You didn't think you could love anyone that much did you?". My mom and I have always been close, as an adult, she is my best friend. I never realized how much she loves me (and my brothers) until that moment in the hospital.
Anne says
Happy Mother's Day…I can't think of just one, but I have tons of amazing mommy memories!
Here's a cute one…I mentioned to my daughter that I hoped that when she has a child one day (not now) that I could be in the delivery room with her. Her answer, "Are you kidding me, if you're not there, I'm not opening my legs!" ๐

I love being a mom! I was raised by a single mom, who did a wonderful job. Some of my favorite memories with her are on vacations just the two of us. I loved road trips with my mom.
Having a mom that worked full time out of neccessity I have learned to treasure my time as a stay at home mom. I wouldn't trade it for anything!
