Week 8 of Boston Training is Complete: 40 miles??
Halfway to Beantown and the plot thickens. I got a diagnosis for my affliction, coupled with a moratorium on running. Out of necessity, I got a little creative in my training. I’m not exactly sure how to score the mileage. Let’s say 40 with most of that loaded into the weekend.
Monday: 1/2 baked Yoga. Smack in the middle of a cat/cow sequence, I heard my cell phone ringing deep in my bag. I belly crawled over and saw it was Thing 1 calling from school. She had a jump rope evaluation in gym and horrors! No gym shoes. Like dutiful moms everywhere, my mat was rolled up, stuffed away and I was in hot pursuit of the gym shoes before you could say namaste.
Tuesday: Kettleworx core, arms/shoulders and fast abs DVDs
Wednesday: Ran 2 miles, walked 1 more, limped and swore about 1/2 of another. Ornery achilles did not cooperate.
45 minutes fuming on the bike.
Thursday: Kettleworx legs, hips, butt DVD
Friday: SRD. Received strained posterior tibialis diagnosis from Sports Doc.
Saturday: Marathon of Fitness for Charity.
1 hr. group cycle
1 hr. muscle conditioning
1 hr. yoga
Sunday:
90 minutes group cycle
90 minutes pool running
Notes: I was actually thrilled with how well the pool running went. I felt like I had a great workout but without the pounding of terrestrial running. I have concerns though about whether pool running is ‘enough’. Only time will tell. This week is shaping up to be even more of a challenge as a sick kiddo + another single parenting stint = slim to no chance of getting to the pool.
Staci Dombroski says
I hate when the kids are sick!!! I hope they feel better and you can get into the pool.
Anne says
Hope everyone feels better soon. Great workout week…considering the SRD. I do hope the healing is quick.
LMC says
Your 1/2 baked yoga tale was funny! I hope everyone gets well soon and that your single parenting stint is not to hectic. Good luck this week with your workouts. I'm cheering for ya!
Marlene says
How do you squeeze it all in??
Hope youre little one feels better and that you can find some pool time this week.
Jamoosh says
I don't think I could do pool running – I would look like a raisin after 90 minutes.
Hannah says
Sick kids are no fun. Hope you have success with the pool running. Sorry to hear your achilles is giving you grief! No good.
NY Wolve says
Yikes! That is a busy schedule! I always wonder about pool running. I never have done it — but next time I get hurt it will make an appearance on my rehab. What shoes do you wear?
Brooke says
will you be well enough to run in two months?
Momma Twitch says
I hope everyone fells better soon!
NY Wolve says
Thanks for the return comment! I meant to ask — what shoes do you wear when water running? Running shoes, no shoes or like those aqua socks? I can imagine your feet getting torn up by the water and the bottom of the pool.
Geri says
I can't imagine how you find the time to train when you're single-parenting AND have a sick kid. Kudos to you – I'm sure it will all pay off April 19!
EricaH says
wow looks like you have a very full week of workouts, great job on the miles ๐ I did the kettleworx fast abs for the first time this week and ouch but it was good ouch
shellyrm aka jogging stroller mama says
I hope you are able to work it all in there while playing single-mom.
Jill says
I'm back to being super sick….so much for doing well in Boston for this girl. Glad you are keeping up with some sort of exercise regiment!!
Velma says
Each day you are getting closer to the goal – you are going to be great.
I think I might have mentioned this before, but Deena Kastor does a lot of water running before she wins Chicago!
Heather says
I am so impressed that you are getting all that in with your injury and with everything else you have going on – way to go! Makes me think of Spirit of the Marathon and Deena Kastor cycling her little legs off. ๐
Julie says
Hi Marcia,
I think that you are an amazing super mom!! Way to keep it together and still manage to get things done! Good luck with the pool running….I have done it before and it is a challenge for me:)
Katie A. says
Keep up the good work – I don't think you'll loose too much fitness! Especially with all the pool running – the only side effect will be pruny fingers and toes and the start line ๐
Great week!
Laura says
I would be really interested if you could do a post explaining a bit more how the pool running works – sorry if it's blatantly obvious and I'm being dippy!!
Heidi says
Thanks for the suggestion of pickups rather than fartleks … I think I prefer that. ๐
6 hours of workouts this weekend … wow, incredible!
Anne Marie says
oh, I'm baggin' what you're rakin' on the sick kid front…happenin' over here at the moment too.
and you ran 2 miles. was it normal outdoor running?
Steel Springs says
I'm sorry that you've got a sick child! I hope everything clears up soon.
Great job with the pool running! You're doing everything that you can to maintain your fitness while you're injured. I'm impressed.
Meg says
I'm so glad you're able to keep up with your training. I hope you keep getting better!
ajh says
I should know this. You said you had an 8 YO but do you have more than 1 kid? I laughed about the abandoning everything, running to help the kid. It doesn't stop even when they are in their 20s!
Rio says
I've heard raves about pool running. I've never tried it, but maybe you can post how you do it someday. I keep thinking that I'd tip over, or something like that.
You are a Supermom!
RunKathyRun says
Wow, what a week; way to go for getting everything done and being able to take care of yourself as well. I was a single mom for almost 10 years and I can't imagine training for a marathon during that time. It took all my time and energy to work and take care of the kids – I don't regret it at all though; they were great times.
I'm also interested in learning more about pool running – care to share?
lindsay says
sorry to hear things didn't go as planned last week, but you still got in some solid workouts! always better than nothing. hope those aches and pains aren't giving you trouble still!
