Before I can look forward to 2010 I guess I’d better look back to see what I did right and wrong in 2009. Reflection time!
I started the year with the March Madness 1/2 for the third consecutive year. I managed to control my pacing this time and came away with a course PR.
Then the injury demon paid a visit. The hill training and speedwork I was doing for Boston caught up with me and I ended up seeking refuge at my friendly neighborhood Sports Chiro. Thank my lucky stars for him! Several treatments later, lots of Boston blue kinesiotape and I was Beantown Bound!
Boston Marathon! What an experience! Never in my wildest dreams did I ever fathom I’d be toeing the line in Hopkinton one day. It’s everything they say it is and lots more.
I spent the early summer trying to finish resting/rehabbing my angry hammy/piriformis. I ran a smattering of shorter races before ramping up to run the Columbus Marathon in fall:
Salute 10k AG 3
HW 10k AG 2, 2nd overall female
WF 5k AG 1
Nike Women’s 10k
Madison 1/2 Marathon Cute town, beautiful day, scenic course, hilly but very enjoyable.
Heritage 5k AG 1 , 2nd overall female
Columbus Marathon A cold, too-fast start and a trudge to the finish. But good enough for another trip to Beantown!
Turkey Trot 5k AG 2
Total Mileage: I honestly don’t know. I could consult my Garmin, but I’ve done my share of watchless running as well. Is that bad? I know many of you set mileage goals and it’s awesome to watch you achieve them. My goal after Boston this year was to stay injury-free and enjoy myself. Mission accomplished on those fronts.
Lowlights:
If I rated the success of my running year by the number of PRs I set, 2008 was my breakthrough year, 2009 pretty much a ‘meh’ year. My pre-Boston injury prompted me to back off of the speedwork, thus only 1 new PR at a summer 4-miler. I focused on building endurance to hopefully run a better half marathon this year. Alas that goal was not reached in 2009 either. Ooops!
Highlights:
Although only 1 PR, I managed to win AG placement in most of my short races
I pulled off another BQ!
In addition to local races, I had the privilege of joining fellow runners at races in Wisconsin, North Carolina, Massachusetts and Ohio
I had a productive ‘off-season’ working on flexibility and core strength
I cleaned up my diet considerably
and most important:
I had a load of fun!
Next up: What’s on deck for 2010?

a great '09! '10 is bound to be even better ๐
(i keep track of my miles in a spreadsheet… i don't set a goal either so that i don't pressure myself into running too much when i'm sick/injured, but i do like to keep track as i'm #'s nerd) ๐
