This week’s Take it and Run Thursday question: You get to run the last six miles of your next marathon with 6 different people. They can be dead or alive; famous or not famous. Who are these people and why did you pick them? Furthermore, why did you pick them for the specific mile you did? Remember, you get an extra .2 miles with runner #6.
First let me say I am such a lone wolf, I’ve never run with anyone during those last treacherous miles of a marathon so this would be new to me. I limited my guests to only four. My mindset in those late miles is usually pensive at best and I don’t think I’d be able to tolerate anyone who is overly chipper.
For miles 20-22: I’d pick our high school track coach. I wasn’t on the track team. I was more of a dance girl back then. But that coach begged me to join. I mean begged. Notes to my homeroom, calls to my house. Apparently my times for the 50- and 100-yd dash we did in PE were something special. Sadly I didn’t bite. It would be another 20 years before I really got “in” to running. That track coach would be so thrilled to know I finally got there! Plus he’s a kick-a$$ runner who would keep me well on pace.
For miles 22-24: I’d pick Mr. Davis, the art teacher I had as a freshman in high school. I had him first semester for Art Foundations and then again for Drawing. Unequivocally the most positive, inspiring person I have ever met. He made us believe there was nothing we couldn’t do. And hey he got me drawing too!
Mile 25: I’d pick my dad. And since this is my make-believe scenario that would mean he actually COULD run. Because in reality he struggles with a nasty mixed bag of heart disease, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, etc. The result of a combination of genetics and poor diet/lifestyle choices. Let’s just say he’s a big part of the reason I work hard to stay healthy.
Mile 26: I’d run with my mom. Although never an athlete by any stretch herself, (my mom and I used to hit the gym together and the second I wasn’t looking she’d slack off) my mom and I have had loads of fun over the years. But she’s a woman who continues to live for her kids, even though all 6 of us are grown and long out of the house. I’d love it if for once she would do something for herself. If she was running that final stretch with me it would mean she committed a loooong time to running/taking care of herself. Plus I know if my mom was with me we’d most likely be busting a gut laughing instead of focusing on our agony.
And finally 2 tidbits of news!
Teamarcia’s 100th post is coming up soon! And to celebrate I’m doing a giveaway! Not entirely sure what it is yet but you can get in the running to win it by following me. So don’t be shy! All followers will get an entry. More details will follow when I do the official 100th post!
Teamarcia will be at the Chicago Marathon! That’s right folks, I’ll be there on race day, in a capacity to be announced later. So excited for all of you running!

hey!!! i am running my first marathon the same day you are running in columbus!!!! i hope i am ready. you are comign to boston this year?! AWESOME. i will be there! i volunteered last year but was at the start line so i think i would rather get to choose where i stand along the course. someday i hope to run it!!! ๐ i have run along the heartbreak hills but it's hard for me to imagine running them after already running 18+miles! sigh. lol.
anyway- happy thursday- i loved your list ๐ i feel the SAME exact way about my mom. the kids are mostly out of the house (my youngest bro and sis are seniors in college) but whenever i go home my mom still buys me my favorite foods and sends me home with muffins and she is just the most selfless woman i know. i want to be just like her ๐ cheers!!!

Hi Marcia,
I was very touched by this post. Especially what you said about your parents. I need to think awhile about my answer but your words, about your Mom particularly, really resonated with me. My Mom has never overcome her struggle to live a healthy life and I would be over the moon to run even one mile with her, let alone 26.2.
Okay and you are going to be at the Chicago Marathon?! How exciting! Can't wait to hear the capacity!
I'll be thinking about my fantasy companion runners for the last 6.2…..
