It’s the last day (nooo!) of July and time for the Tuesdays on the Run Linkup. As we do at the end of every month, we’re asking you to grade your month. Did you do everything you wanted to?
I had a bit of an epiphany in July. I’ve been jacking around with thyroid meds literally all year. My weight went up and my motivation went down. I took my diet down to the studs if you will and started eating cleaner than clean. Better than I’d ever done. Still the weight would. Not. Budge. Through it all my running sucked. I mean suuucked. Weak, winded, slow….all of those things. Finally FINALLY I got on a new medication. It’s been about 4 weeks now. Here’s how things went:
Running: A
I’ve been getting all my runs in. I’ve been hitting the track so there’s even some quality creeping in. I haven’t really built up mileage yet, but that’s because I didn’t need to. The building starts now though. Overall I’m going with an A.
Crosstraining: A
I’ve been swimming, biking, doing yoga, slamming on the strength training front and I’ve even added in some Youtube HIIT and Tabata workouts. That’s an A in my book as well.
Weightloss: A+
Like I said above, I’ve been eating super clean since April, but still struggling to lose even a few pounds. This month I sort of said eff it and added back some foods I’d been denying myself. I still love my big salads at lunch and I’ll often skip breakfast and opt for intermittent fasting. I’ve stayed mostly away from added sugars too. But I’ve added back a small serving or two of pasta or rice each week when I know I’m running the next day. On a couple of occasions I had a burger on a (gasp!) bun! And you know what? I’ve noticed some of my runs starting to feel better. AND I lost 4 more pounds, putting me at -10 for the year, which is huge for me. Of course the thyroid med has something to do with it but I’ve heard how the body tends to hang onto weight when we don’t feed it enough and maybe that’s what was happening with me as well. Who knows?
Fun: A
With college visits in Florida, all the birthdays in the family plus an epic blogger race weekend right here in Chicago, there was no shortage of fun in July. You guessed it: I’m taking an A here too.
How was July for you? What are you looking forward to in August?

Go Marcia!!!!! I am not a nutritionist, but I do believe that theory about the body holding on to “weight” when it’s not getting what it needs. I thought you looked great last weekend, though I didn’t seem to get much time to chat with you….the weekend flew by much too quickly. We’ll simply just have to have a repeat #problemsolved 😉
MCM Mama Runs says
Sounds like things are going really well for you with running. And yay for finally getting that pesky thyroid under control! Hope August is more of the same awesomeness.
Meranda@Fairytalesandfitness says
I’m proud of you for eating clean all those months. I wish I could commit to that. Have you found there to be a difference in how you feel when you eat breakfast opposed to fasting?
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
You had a really great month! I’m so glad the meds are finally starting to help. I agree its better to make sure you’re eating enough…especially when you are exercising so much!
Melissa says
Wow, looks like a great month all around! And yes to sometimes giving yourself s break when it comes to food- glad to see that my have helped you lose w3ight. I hope next month is just as good for you!!
Wendy Hammond says
sounds like you had a fabulous month! I’m a nutrition coach and yes, everyone’s body responds differently to different macros and it sounds like you listened to what your body was telling you. Great job.
Wendy says
I”m so happy to hear that things are going well for you. Your IG posts have had some impressive mileage! I’m still looking for that fountain of youth. Let me know if you find it!

That’s great news that you were finally able to get new thyroid medicine! I know that’s a huge relief.
Awesome job on your weight loss too! It’s also good to know that adding back certain foods made you feel better on your runs as well.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Sounds like a great month to me! Great to hear that the new thyroid med is making a difference.
Lesley says
It must be such a relief to find that medication. I have read that theory too, that the body refuses to lose those last pounds if it thinks it’s being deprived. Sometimes “eff it” is a good feeling, and you’re getting results from it.
Jennifer @ Fit Nana says
Hooray for the new thyroid medicine! And, I’m glad you’ve added back in some foods and are noticing a difference. I hear from so many people that fueling the body actually benefits it with not only energy but allowing it to do its job. I definitely say you had a great month!
Beth E. says
Great to hear you’ve had some success! That thyroid is a bugger, I tell you. I’m in the spot where my weight won’t budge despite squeaky-clean eating and some intermittent fasting. Gotta figure things out!
Keep up the good work!

I love the theme of this — oddly it segues up with my month-end one which I’ve started but will probably double as my weekly wrap.
I swear meds/diet equal parts art & science. Weight loss – lower dose metformin (for PCOS, not diabetes). Lower dose stalls weight loss
Rachel says
Sounds like a pretty great July! Your body is always changing and its needs are not the same day in and day out. Way to go for listening to what your body needed this month!
Laurie says
Looks like you had an awesome month! You are such an overachiever!!! 😉 Not sure how to grade my month. I am sort of burned out from grading for those 30+ years I was a school teacher, but my grade would definitely be lower than yours except in the fun department, and that’s the most important one, right?
Zenaida Arroyo says
All As is fabulous! You had a busy month and accomplished many things in July. And that is great news on the new thyroid medicine.
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
you really crushed it this month! Here’s to another great month ahead
The Accidental Marathoner says
I’m still struggling with the weight loss. I’m stepping up my workouts with two fall marathons on the horizon, so hopefully that will help kick things into gear for me. My eating is pretty good, but dare I say if I cut down on the daily (yes daily) wine consumption, that might just do the trick? I think you had a great month–well-deserved A grades!
Coco says
Yay! I really hope you’ve found the right meds now. Awesome way to nail it on all fronts.
Darlene says
Hooray for new meds. Glad everything is going well for you. Esp on the Fun and Run.
Judy @Chocolaterunsjudy says
Wow, you killed July, especially on the weight loss front — doesn’t matter the reason, just be happy. I’d be really happy with that, but ain’t gonna happen.
Deprivation never, ever works. It always backfires. But of course sometimes you have to eat cleaner, too.
I’d like to soak up some of that cross training by osmosis!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Congrats on a fantastic month! I’m glad you’re feeling better and your runs are getting stronger!
Karen says
Woohooo!! July sounds like it was an awesome month for you! Yay!!
