Summer plans. That’s this week’s Tuesdays on the Run topic. Did you make a summer bucket list? I’m not one to cram all sorts of “should do’s” into a season but summer around here is so fleeting you kind of have to be on your toes because before you know it, kids are heading back to school. Am I right?
In a perfect world I’d have lost at least 10 pounds by now, who am I kidding? In a perfect world I’d be down to BQ weight which is -22. I’d be running better, faster, stronger and heck I wouldn’t be so dog tired all the time.
The reality is far from a perfect world scenario though.
Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been doing everything E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G I can to drop the weight:
- Daily salads filled with tons of greens, veggies, protein, healthy fats
- Lean protein and veggies for dinner
- Plenty of water
- Plenty of fiber
- Plenty of exercise
- No chips, cookies, crackers, candies, cakes, ice cream or pies as far as the eye can see
- Whole and unprocessed all day long
- Intermittent fasting
- Minimal added sugars, even cutting my kombucha intake from 1/day to 1/week when I realized there were 10g of sugar lurking in each serving
Before heading to La Crosse, I was down 7 pounds. Sure 7 pounds is fine, but based on the effort I put in to my diet and exercise for the past 3 months, it should have been more. Much more.
Plus there’s menopause voodoo going on. Research shows that when a woman’s estrogen drops, as it does in menopause, the body takes on fat to compensate because fat is estrogenic. This belly fat is no joke, not to mention unhealthy.
What the heck is going on?
Yesterday I got the answer from my Endocrinologist. My TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is still too high, which means I don’t have adequate thyroid function, ergo my energy and metabolism suck. Ever since the med I was taking was discontinued at the end of last year, I’ve been unable to find a replacement that works for me. It’s been tough to say the least.
I don’t often whine about it, but despite eating better than I ever have, I’m chronically tired and sluggish. My runs are slow and labored. I’ll try yet another med, which I’ll start next week, but other than that, I feel like I have to accept not feeling my best.
The plan for this summer?
Enjoy it as best I can while continuing the search for the magic bullet for my dang thyroid disease.
What are your plans for summer?
Wendy says
I can only imagine how frustrated you are. This getting older thing is….getting old. I hope your new med provides the thyroid hormones you need to kickstart your metabolism!
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
I honestly used to think that women of our age just made up the whole weight gain thing and really they had just slacked off. Well, I sure have had a rude awakening myself the last year. I was almost hoping it was my thyroid bc then I would have something to blame but nope just me getting older. I am sure it is so frustrating having to try out a bunch a meds. I hope you find one that works for you.
MCM Mama Runs says
That’s so frustrating that they discontinued your med. Fingers crossed you find a good replacement asap. I don’t have thyroid issues, but this damn perimenopause thing is kicking my butt. I know that it beats the alternative, but man, getting older is not for sissies.
Coco says
Ugh, that must be so frustrating! I hope you do find something that works for you soon! We have a big vacay planned for July but I still want to figure out a beach escape for August.
Kimberly Hatting says
Oh Marcia. I can only imagine how frustrated you must be feeling, and I’m sure what I’m imaging is merely the tip of the ice berg. I sincerely hope your new meds do the trick or at least you get some more definitive answers. Sending huge hugs your way….
Bobbi says
30 pounds. Menopause is a bitch. Solidarity, sister! I keep hoping that it’ll fix itself if I keep doing things right, but it’s so disheartening.
AmyC says
I do not like getting old 😉 but I do like your summer plans! I hope your new medicine does the trick.
Teresa says
I’m sorry that you having such a time with that dang thyroid …and I’m sure menopause isn’t helping matters any. I’ve been so stinking frustrated with my menopot lately! It just seems like no matter how much I work out and how healthy I eat …it just sits there, taunting me. I’m sure hoping I get some results from my fat freezing procedure! And I hope your doctor finds the right meds for you soon! xoxo
Lesley says
I hope you can find the right meds. Enjoy your summer. It always seems like summer is a long season, and it’s not. We’re already halfway through June, and I know July is going to be even faster.
Wendy Hammond says
I feel ya on the thyroid and pre-menopause! I am going through something similar. My integrative MD is awesome and I am on a few natural supplements which seem to help. The fatigue is no joke though.
Laurie says
Awww….good luck finding the right meds. It is terrible to be tired all the time, I know. I have Lyme disease, but it is pretty good right now. Dang menopause! It makes losing weight almost impossible.
The Accidental Marathoner says
I’m sorry your thyroid is still out of whack. How frustrating. That and menopause–a double-whammy. Hopefully the new medication will do some magic for you. I don’t have too many concrete plans for summer. My kids are older so we really don’t have to plan around their schedules anymore. Of course my 89 year old mom lives with us, which is even harder than having kids. We have to plan everything around making sure she is taken care of.
vicki says
I hope you figure out your thyroid… it has got to be so frustrating!
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
Sorry your thyroid is so high :/ I hope you will still be able to check off your bucket list items! Which concert are you going to?
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
Summer is so hard to keep weight in check I think. Yes we are more active being outside. However, with all the cookouts and ice cream visits it is easy to indulge.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I do not have thyroid issues . . . and yet — weight loss is NEVER easy for me. And yes, now a year & a half post menopause, my weight has stayed pretty much the same, give or take, but the body composition — ugh. Some days it does get to me And energy? What’s that? Feel free to whine! It’s good for the soul, right?
We leave for ID in less than a month. And then there’s my 18 mile race, and that’s going to involve lots of solo miles, although for the most part my training has been solo anyway. And it’s going pretty good. I was soooooo tempted to stay inside this week with the increased heat & humidity but decided to just tackle it.
lindsey @ livinglovingrunner says
You are certainly doing more to try and lose weight than I am…but that darn thyroid can really mess things up! I am running into a similar stale-mate with weight loss – likely my thyroid as well. I am finally at 6mo checks rather than 3mo checks for my levels… Your bucket list looks great and I will probably steal it for my summer as well 🙂
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I’m with you on the dang menopause-middle – this belly thing is a rude awakening. I’ve tried and tried but seem to be making no progress so I feel your pain. Sorry, the thyroid is cooperating 🙁 I’m getting mine checked next week cause I’m really struggling. Hope your new meds do the trick!
Jennifer @ Fit Nana says
That’s crazy that the medicine that you were taking was discontinued. How does that even happen? I hope you’re able to find something that works soon!
I’d love everything on your bucket list (except for maybe the beach #justsaynotosand) – sounds like you have a great summer planned!
Julie @ Running in a Skirt says
So frustrating. I hope they can help you figure it out.
Your summer plans seem perfect- I’m ready for some pool time too.

I feel you on the “should be” weight loss. I’m at a plateau that I only half understand. Food explains some, but not all of it. Grateful to my food log though for some clarity
