As predicted, this week was like a huge sigh of relief. Before we delve in, here’s how the workouts shook out. Warning: Even though it’s week one of Berlin Marathon training, this may not look like marathon training to you. It doesn’t to me either, and that’s ok.
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Run 6 miles
Wednesday: Cycle and Strength
Thursday: 5 Miles Progression Run
Friday: Strength, Plyo Intervals
Saturday: Run 4 Miles
Sunday: Run with Jill
I felt a sense of relief, not to mention fatigue, after last Sunday’s triathlon and Sweet 16 party. Monday’s rest was much needed and Tuesday I just ran whatever pace felt good. I’ll ramp up the intensity another day. Soon.
The first glimpse of my brand-new high school junior
During final exams, the mom taxi worked overtime. Finally on Thursday, I dropped off a high school sophomore and picked up a junior. Time flies faster and faster. Thing 2 has 6 days of school left before we’re in full-on summer mode. I’m ready!
Me and my niece/goddaughter after her high school graduation
The weekend was filled with graduations…four of them….so we made the party rounds. I was not in the least bit emotional at any of my own graduations but now? It doesn’t take much to get me feeling a little misty. I’ll probably need a sedative when my kids graduate high school and college.
I finished out the week with a visit from a special BRF from Colorado. Jill and I have known each other since 2009 and officially met in Boston 2010. Since then there’ve been all sorts of running and racing shenanigans.
We got out for some easy miles on the prairie trails followed by breakfast. It’s always so good to catch up….and plot our next adventure.
As if the week wasn’t exciting enough, I found my own face staring at me from the pages of the June issue of Women’s Health Magazine. Apparently #plankfacefriday is officially a thing.
2 more things:
- If you’re jonesing for some triathlon action in the Chicago area, use MARCIASHEALTHYSLICE to save $5 off registration for the Espirit de She Sprint Tri in Naperville, IL on June 11. I’ve done this one twice and it’s a goodie. Nice course, great swag and after party.

How was your week? Ever “ease” into a training cycle? Is school out where you are? Did you enter my giveaway? It’s ending soon!
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner says
Easing into a training cycle sounds pretty smart to me! Loved seeing your photo in WH mag so fun. It’s crazy how fast the kids grow it’s just killing me that mine are 17 and 20

Your daughter is beautiful! Time does go by so quickly! Congratulations to your niece on her graduation also! Your training for week one for your marathon looks great to me! So glad you got to run with your BRF! My bestie is in town all the way from Alaska and we get to run together tomorrow! I’m so excited to see her! She’s a fast runner so it will be fun to see how she does in the humidity down here. She’s used to the cold temps of Alaska. I can’t wait! Hope you have a great Memorial Day and week!

I also used week 1 to “ease” into training. I still needed some rest/recovery from the Brooklyn 1/2 (my hamstrings were screaming at me).
Whoa – 4 graduations in one weekend?! That’s a lot but I guess that’s to be expected during graduation season! You do such a great job at navigating everything – it’s amazing.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Graduations leave me teary-eyed especially now that I have a high-schooler. I need to find a way to make time slow down just a little. How fun about your photo in WH!

I’m a blubbering idiot at all things graduation, whether it’s my kids or not (it’s almost like I’m still pregnant LOL). I almost always ease into a 26.2 training because I’m pretty much always “13.1-ready.” The college son is home for the summer, but the HS daughter (a soon-to-be senior) will be done on Wednesday. Let the summer begin. 😉
Kimberly Hatting says
So many graduations – wow. Congratulations! I love taking training slowly and easing in. Don’t want to hurt myself!
Coco says
Four graduations — oh my! Your daughter is so lovely — her day will be here soon! Love your #plankface — much better than #rbf anyway.
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
My son still has 2 weeks of school! Prom is next weekend-I finally got him to get fitted for his tux. Nothing like waiting until the last minute. After that is finals and then bring on summer! How did our kids get so old?
Darlene says
4 graduations!? I’m glad my step-kids are all grown up.
Is she Run with Jill (blog)?

A few more days and then I am on summer break. Excited about it!!

School here ends June 1… I am so looking forward to it (traffic becomes so much more tolerable). It always seems the first couple weeks of a training cycle are ramp up weeks… so it feels like “easing” into it.
Sherry says
Sounds like a great first week of marathon training to me! Time sure does fly. But my kiddos don’t get out of school until Jun 23, which is late because they have to make up a week of snow days.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I think its so smart to ease into training! I know Ive started out too hard before because I felt ready to go but it got me in trouble later. Congrats on making it into Women’s Health Magazine!
Fairytales and fitness says
Ha, so cool that you saw your face in WHM. I like reading women’s running because I always end up seeing people I know through blogging. Now I guess I’ll have to start reading WH too!

Awww, I have a brand new high school Jumior too…. my baby!! Wait, what??? I think it just hit me that in two years I’ll be an empty nester! 🤔😢😄 Some mixed emotions on that one.
Glad you took a week to somewhat relax and recover from your hectic month. I’m looking forward to following along with you on yiur journey to Berlin ..that will be so awesome!
See you in Utah!

My last son is officially a senior now and is already out for the summer. We’ve got to work on college plans. Your daughter is lovely! Are you nervous about her driving? It is so cool you are in a magazine! I’ll get your autograph in a few days. Can’t wait to see you. Thanks for linking, Marcia!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I’m pretty sure school goes into June here . . . or at least it did when I was growing up! My niece graduated from college this weekend, but of course we weren’t invited to the actual graduation, and I just couldn’t make yet another trip down on Friday (or Memorial Day). I feel kind of badly, but once in a while you gotta do what you gotta do!
Glad things are sort of settling down for you.

You had one busy week! But then it looks like a fun visit with your BRF- that is cool! Women’s health mag is pretty cool! I had to show the hubby 🙂 cause you know, now you are famous! 2 weeks to go!
Jill says
Darlene, yes it is ME!! 🙂 Marcia is one of my BFF running friends :). Hope you’re doing well!
I wish I were going to Berlin with you, but I know you’ll have a great time with Thing 1. We have more adventures ahead anyway….
So So SO great to see you!!
