It’s time to wrap up February and assess our progress and this week’s Tuesdays on the Run linkup asks you to do just that. How’d February shake out for you? Was it everything you’d hoped it would be? Any surprises?
For the sake of being consistent, I’m going to use the same criteria I used in January to grade myself.
Running: B
I’d hoped to run more miles this month, as a way of ramping up to “official” training for the Utah Valley Half Marathon in June. Our spring-like weather was certainly conducive to getting out and hitting the trails. Did I succeed? In February I ran 68 miles vs 57 in January, so yes, I ran more, but barely. But in all fairness, February is a shorter month too. Because I’m still being careful with my hamstring, I haven’t yet added back speedwork. Maybe that’ll happen in March.
Swimming: B
I hung tough in the pool with at least one, usually 2 and once even 3 swims/week. Where I need to improve is I need to swim LONGER. Some of my swims are as short as 20 minutes. This needs to change as my May tri draws nearer.
Crosstrain: A
I’ve gone to at least one and sometimes two spin classes per week, usually creating a brick workout by either swimming or running off the bike. Strength training has been going well too, at least until I strained my elbow at Crossfit on 2/19. Even so, there’s still plenty of strength training I can do. It’s all about working around our limitations, right? Because my hamstring is feeling pretty good, and I’ve given it lots of time to recover, March will be the month I ease back into yoga.
Clean Up Diet: A
Can you believe I’m been mostly free of added sugars since returning from vacation back in January? Yeah neither can I. With this thyroid thing going on, I’ve had to be really strict about what I eat and I’m proud to say, my diet has been on point. Whole, unprocessed foods are my main jam. Gone are the mindless grazing and daily treats. Who am I?
Weightloss: A
While I’m no longer obsessing about the scale or the food journal like I did in January, I’m still weighing myself at least once a week and food journaling a few times a week to stay on track. I know that weightloss is not a realistic expectation with my current thyroid situation, so at this point I’m happy I’ve found a balance where I’m able to fuel my workouts and not gain weight, although I’m not losing weight either. I’d need to resort to unhealthy tactics (<1000 calories a day) to do that.
Fun: C
The emotional roller coaster continues.Β I hate to be a downer but it’s been a tough month. I’m spread pretty thin taking care of my dad, who is hanging in there, however a couple days ago my Uncle G (dad’s brother) died. It’s very sad of course, and the timing…well just sucks. Not that there’s ever a “good” time to die. It remains to be seen what impact this has on my dad.
Miracles do happen. My appointment with the Endocrinologist was moved up from March 22 to March 8. Yesss! I am beyond ready to get some insight as to what is going on in Hashimoto Thyroid-ville.
High School Track.Β Last weekend the teenager was selected to represent her team at a regional Varsity Track Invitational where she ran the 55m dash and long jumped. She did great and her team finished 2nd overall, which was huge, and so uplifting. I think she’s going to have a great season.
March Plan
In March I’ll start my training plan for the Utah Valley Half as well as continue with tri training. If I can get my thyroid issues under control, I expect to feel less fatigue and sluggishness and hopefully drop some weight. That would be amazing. Be cause I’ve given this ornery hamstring all winter to heal it’s feeling pretty good, I’m going to carefully return to yoga. We’ll see how nimble I am….not.
Race Schedule
My spring races are intentionally sparse, due to the reasons explained above:

Great job with the cross training and cleaning up your diet! With the swimming, I think any amount of time in the pool should be applauded…especially in the winter. Glad you get to see the dr. sooner- good luck with that! So sorry about your uncle.
Judy@Chocolaterunsjudy says
So sorry about your uncle. I’ve been dealing with my own parental issues that I keep mainly off the blog; it really sucks.
But geez — look at all the exercise! Wow. Pretty sure I will never tri (besides the bike thing) because seriously, who has that kind of time?
Melissa says
Wow an A for weightloss- way to go lady!! It’s so hard to rate myself, I’m either too hard on myself or too easy I think π here’s to a great March!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Looks like things are heading up for you! Glad to hear that the hammie is behaving. Sorry to hear about your uncle.
If you ever want to join us on our early Saturday morning runs, let me know! We run in BG.
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
I cross train often and I think that has been helping me stay clear from injuries. I have not incorporate swimming into my cross training though. Maybe I should add that, they do have a pool at the gym which I never use.

You are such a beast with your swimming endeavors. I’m, however, am quite content to watch from afar π My miles ended up at 73! More than I anticipated. March is gonna be a re-set month for me….I’ve been over-indulging with the chai latte’s (it has been cold outside…at times), so I now only get ONE of those sweet treats a day. Hopefully, I won’t have any night sweats or body shakes LOL
Kimberly G says
Great job this month on all of your workouts!
I’m so sorry to hear about your uncle and dad π I’ll keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner says
Looks to me like you had a pretty strong month. I am finding the swimming is getting easier as the weeks go by. Since it is the shortest part of the tri races, I am feeling like twice a week is good for that. I am going to do my month report on Friday and will link up then!
Michelle says
Sorry to hear about your Uncle/Dad. Sending lots of prayers. February was a great month for me, because my hubby is finally home after a very long year!!! March I look forward to getting back at a normal routine of balancing work, kids, AND working out! π
Lesley says
Sounds like a strong month to me. I know all about hamstrings, and build that thing up before speed work. I hope your elbow improves too for more strength training π
vicki says
Great month!!! I’m so impressed with all the cross training.
Christy says
I need to do a major diet clean up, I have been eating way too much sugar lately and my jeans are telling me the truth of it. Looks like overall Feb treated you pretty good, sorry about your Dad
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Marcia I’m sorry to hear about your uncle.
You had a great month of workouts. It’s great that your hammy’s been cooperating! Hope it continues to behave!
MCM Mam says
So sorry to hear about your uncle and the stress with your dad. I hear you on February being a bit of a rough month.
Great job balancing all the workouts – I confess I still primarily run…
Hope you get some useful answers about your thyroid and the Utah Valley training goes well. I’m still crying in my beer about that one.
Rachel says
I’m sorry you had a lousy February in the “fun” category. My dad isn’t doing so well either and I’m very far away from him so half the time I’m not even sure what’s going on. Sorry to hear about your uncle as well.
But at least you’re working out and eating well! That’s definitely great news. I had ice cream over the weekend (and again tonight) and I must say, I missed it! Buuuuuut I also felt terrible eating it because I know how bad it is for me. So there’s that… Whole, unprocessed is the way to go!
Mary Beth Jackson says
Lots of prayers your way for the family- you are right there is never a good time for a death. Congrats to you though for really sticking to that diet- very impressive! I am looking forward to what March has for both of us!
Katie Shepherd says
I’m so sorry about your uncle’s passing and about your dad. I’m glad your appointment with the endocrinologist got moved to the 8th! I hope you can get some answers! I’ve tried suggesting going to a specialist for her thyroid issues. It’s hard seeing her work so hard and not lose weight. I gave my running and strength training an A for February! I logged the most miles in several months and thanks to my job teaching classes 3 days a week, I am getting plenty of cross training! Woo hoo!
Katie Shepherd says
I’ve suggested a specialist for my mother, that is..Hope you have a great week!
Susie @ Suzlyfe says
SO i definitely cleaned up my diet… in that my diet is to clean up everything around me π
HoHo Runs says
I’m so glad you got your appointment moved up. Waiting on a much anticipated doctor’s appointment is the pits. I hope to be training for Utah right along with you. My grade for cross training in February was A++. Running? A big FAT zero.
Abby @BackatSquareZero says
I am so proud of you for cleaning up your diet, that is where I struggle the most. I am really sorry about your dad.
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
It sounds like things are coming together with all of your workouts (yay for a healing hammie)!
It’s hard being sandwiched between caring for children and parents. I hope you can get your “fun” grade up from a C to at least a B next month. I’m sorry to hear about your uncle; you have my condolences.
Thanks for linking up!
William N. Lott says
It is a good plan for March. I will make my plan for March too, it is losing weights as much as I can :). Thanks!
Michelle says
Sorry things have been such a roller coaster. I’m glad there’s been some good with the bad!
Richard Friesen says
Hope March will be better for you. Personnally, I think I achieved quite a lot of goals in February, especially that I finished my cooking course. There were many good experiences!
