These Friday five random thoughts are coming to you compliments of a Nyquil-induced stupor. Getting sick was inevitable. I’ve been flying, the teenager has the plague, I’ve been driving said teenager all over town, it’s cold as balls. Better to be sick now than over the holidays, which are approaching faster than you can say cold as balls.
Sometimes the universe saves you from yourself…or tries to. My favorite holiday white chocolate/peppermint pretzels are in the stores so I dragged an oversized bag of them home from Costco. Because one enormous bag wasn’t enough apparently, when I went back to Costco, I couldn’t help but entertain the prospect of buying yet another bag. Thank heavens they were already sold out. So I opted for just one (teeny tiny, almost single serving-sized, yeah right) bag of them from Trader Joe’s. That sounded like a Runfession. More on those in a sec.
To tri or not to tri? You know I’ve been hemming and hawing on this question, as I always do. Then this book showed up in the mail. If Joe Friel says TRI who am I to object? I can’t wait to dive into this book. Maybe it’ll be the magic bullet…
Raise the bar on fashion. The other day the teenager asked me if I could wear something that “wasn’t neon” to her school art show. Ouch. So I scrambled a little, hit up a certainย website and came up with a (non-neon) outfit, which was delivered the day after I returned from the girls’ weekend. I’m too lazy to take a pic of and certainly the kids are no help so you’ll have to be left hanging for now. I will tell you there’s a (non-neon) coat involved and it’s nice and warm, cuz it’s cold as balls here finally. Let’s see how many times I can type that.
Final Runfessions for the Year. Seriously was this the fastest year ever? Yes, yes it was. Our final Runfessions linkup for 2016 will be on Friday 12/30. I’ll be runfessing from Florida….unless I get my act together and write something ahead….
So yeah Florida. After an amazing girls’ running weekendย in Florida, I’m heading to Naples in 11 days or so. I can guarantee you it won’t be nearly as much fun as Panama City Beach was, because 3 letters: M-I-L. But still, Florida trumps cold as balls so there’s that.
What holiday treat do you find irresistible? Are you a style icon? Any fashion tips for me? MIL wrangling tips?
Iโm linking up with Meranda, Lacey and Rachel for the Friday Five.

You totally crack me up! Too bad I didn’t know you when my MIL was still around…we could have played a serious game of one-up-manship (or whatever it’s called). I trust my MIL sincerely meant well, but let’s just say her bedside manner was lacking (and my over-sensitive nature was usually a basket case in her midst). And, you know I like my color…and all things neon ๐
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I don’t know where this cold weather came from but I am ready to go back to Florida! We have somehow made it 2 days without opening the pretzels yet…but once we do they won’t last for long!
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
Um #5. I love you. I am trying to decide if I want to go outside and freeze my ass off today for my run. On the one hand, I want to run double digits, and I’ve run on the TM so far this week. On the other hand…”Feels Like” 11 deg.
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Cold as balls? Soon we’ll have snow balls…
I hope you feel better!
Coco says
The first MIL tip that comes to mind is count to ten and ~breathe~. Then go for a run. I had better start making a list for my year-end runfessions!
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner says
Peppermint and pretzels are a great combo! I will need to check out that book as well. Hope you do jump back into tri races so we can chat about them together.
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
Are your neon clothes athletic gear or athletic in style?? I wear a lot of black and grey. I am sure I have something you could wear that wouldn’t embarrass your daughter! Although right now I have my zebra jacket on! It’s a little… loud.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I have the plague, too, which was no doubt brought to me by my niece & sister. Except I am just a couch potato & will probably miss tomorrow’s fun run. ๐ Wah!
The one time I have been to Naples was to visit the inlaws, so I feel you. It has sad memories for me, too, because it was the first time I realized there was something not right with my FIL (he was dx with dementia a few months later). But it is a very nice place & I hope you enjoy your trip!
Those pretzels would totally do me in. That’s the sort of thing I don’t have much control over so I just don’t bring it in. At all. Too dangerous.
Feel better soon!

I liked going to Florida during winter breaks because it did get us out of the cold. It may have been chilly at night, but I prefer to wear sweatshirts instead of parkas.
alexandra @ my urban family says
I’m so glad we’re in the season of peppermint! And it IS cold as balls. Colder maybe. Brrr
Karen says
I had to click, I should have known it be Prana ๐
I hope in Naples you can find lots of reasons to get out for a walk lol
Dove Chocolate peppermint swirls, I just love them….and I couldn’t stop eating with my wine last night. and yes I do need to detox lol
Tiffany @ The Chi-Athlete says
omg @ Naples + Deer MIL. (I’m lol’ing as I type this) I NEED those Pretzel Chips in my life!
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
I think you should look for some balls in Naples, some big ones! ๐ They will make you feel better no doubt! Good luck with the MIL, A holiday treat I indulge in is cream cheese with pepper jelly appetizer! I swear I could eat the whole block in one sitting!
vicki says
Hope you get over the crud soon! I’m counting my blessings that in 12 years I haven’t had to deal with M-I-L issues. I just made a batch of chocolatey-peanuty Christmas candy… I need to start giving it away… I have a feeling I’ll be munching on it all weekend!
Mary Beth Jackson says
You crack me up! I am enjoying a container of homemade peanut butter balls that I bought in Wisconsin. I eat them in pairs- one for each thigh ๐ Your MIL is definitely not as much fun as we are but Naples is a nice area to be tortured in! ๐
Meranda @fairytales and fitness says
We’re not cold as balls here yet but it certainly did get cold here this week and I bet I’ll finally be wearing my winter coat next week to work!
Funny about your daughter wanting you to wear something non-neon. I’m sure what you picked made her proud! (or as proud as a teenager can be..lol)
Rachel says
Oh man, good luck with that MIL trip…
And feel better. It sucks ass being sick. You need some matzah ball soup, mama!
Stacey says
To tri!! Joe Friel’s new book is on my Christmas list ๐ A recent Triathlete Training Podcast featured Mr Friel talking about his book and it sounds like a great update to the previous edition!
Darlene says
I can only handle my MIL for a couple of hours. I feel for y ou.
But Naples is a wonderful place. It won’t be as much fun as with the 7 of us but the scenery will boost your spirits.
Hope you feel better. Glad it happened after #HoLottafun.
It is COLD!!!!!!!!!!!! here too. Not a fan. I even wimped out on a run already which is so unlike me.
Cara the Heavy Runner says
That MIL deer. Totally cracks me up.
One tip for the three-letter problem: breath deeply, count to ten and stay away as much as you can.
Karen - Fit in France says
Enjoy your time in Florida. I was in Maine the past 4 days and it was so cold. We don’t get that kind of cold in Paris.
As for your MIL ? I try to sneak away to the bedroom once in a while, or I have learned to put up a sheild to fend off all that negative energy.
Ana says
I hope you are feeling better! ja ja! Was that 3 times that it was cold as balls ?
Megan says
Quite possibly the most entertaining blog post that I’ve read I a while! My college roommate always said cold as balls — cracks me up!
Abby @BackatSquareZero says
I keep seeing these pretzel crisps everywhere in white and dark chocolate and it is making me very angry that I have to be Gluten Free!!!
