This week I officially put myself “on the fence” about this whole fall marathon thing.
Blame the heat, travels to Ireland, lackluster training and plenty of distractions and doubts are creeping in. Running the half in Indianapolis would be so much easier. But would I ever forgive myself if I flake? Here’s how my workouts went this week:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Strength
Wednesday: Run 4 miles (still not feeling 100% so traded speedwork for easy)
Thursday: Plyo Intervals
Friday: Run 3 miles + Strength (this wasn’t on the plan either…not that I looked at the plan)
Saturday: Bike 15 miles (hot as blazes. This felt great)
Sunday: Run 15 miles
Best run of the week was hands down my weekend long run. Because Mother Nature gifted us with 61 degrees and low humidity. Boom! Still the thought of running 11 more miles is not appealing.
With the kids back to school, I kind of floundered this week and workouts took a backseat to everything else going on. Because high school has a new start time this year that conflicts with elementary school, getting the kids off to school has been like a Chinese fire drill. Now that school’s in session, I no longer have access to my beloved track in the morning. Running later means it’s hotter when I get out. Blech.
Highlights
Single parenting week: The Caveman was in California all week so he missed the back to school shenanigans. Ok this is not a highlight but we made the best of it. His Friday flight was cancelled so we didn’t see him again until Saturday. When he’s gone I make sure we have special “girls’ night” fun and invite friends over. There were cupcakes. And pizza. And lots of Olympics, of course. Clearly I need an intervention.
We may have gone for free “bring your own cup” Slurpees. Something like this…
Garden gone wild.
Garden: The garden loves heat and we’ve had plenty this year. To say my garden is out of control would be an understatement. The pumpkins and winter squash have taken everything else hostage. Not even sure how many pumpkins I have lurking under there, but I can say some of them are already ripe. What?? In August??
New Shoes: How can I waver on doing the full marathon with shoes like these in the house? Pretty sure I’ve never been as crazy about a shoe design as I am about these Asics. It’s hard not to crack them out early but so far I’m holding strong.
Tomorrow’s Tuesdays on the run topic is Memorabilia. We wanna know what you do with all those race bibs, heat sheets, posters, and medals. Do you keep? Display? Toss? Donate? Any favorites?
This Friday and the last Friday of every month is Runfession Friday! Stop by and linkup your run- gym- swim- tri-, heck any ‘fessions are fair game. I promise you’ll feel better!
How’d your week go? Did you ever cut down from a full to half marathon?
I’m linking up with Tricia and Holly for the Weekly Wrap.
…and with Ilka and Angela for the Sunday Fitness and Food Linkup. Join us!

I’m so jealous of your weather today! I was melting during your nice long run. Those are THE cutest design for a running shoe I’ve ever seen. Yes, you have to run the marathon for that reason alone. I’m very impressed with your garden. That’s going to be a lot of pumpkins. I can’t wait to hear what all you do with them. The only thing we grew this year were jalapenos. And I don’t eat them. Thanks for linking, Marcia!
Darlene says
Wow. Those are crazy shoes. I’ve never done a full so I can’t help you there.
My week was busy – running, hiking, tennis and then a 5K
Coco says
Wow, your garden is crazy! On the other hand, my mint and basil are shrunken stalks after our heat wave. A full marathon is a huge time commitment – one I’ve never made! If that’s not your priority this fall, I’m sure you’ll forgive yourself!
Ilka says
Tricia – you just got off he plane and you already rocked a great week with a long run. You’re such a champ! I’m sure you feel super exhausted though. I love your running shoes – I want them, too! -to say they’re cool is an understatement.
So awesome you have garden full of pumpkins – my kids would love it!
Marathon training right now during these hot months is super hard – I still didn’t make up my mind about a December marathon. But then again every running week is different – this coming week things could totally turn around! It’s funny how that goes in running.

Oh, those shoes!!!!! Too bad I’m not an Asics gal (yet) or I’d be sporting those babies. We also had a major cold front come through Saturday afternoon…..it was almost chilly (???) moving the son back to college today.
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
And lunch. Don’t forget about lunch. That was a highlight of my week! Let’s do it again soon.
Marcia says
Wendy lunch was definitely a highlight! 😀

The image of the dog on the fence is cracking me up!
Totally understand how you feel about the weather. This summer has been pretty brutal when it comes to running, but I can feel the cooler Fall temperatures coming in a few weeks (hopefully)! I also love your sneakers!!!
Meranda @fairytales and fitness says
Those shoes are great! I always thought asics had some of the best designs. I saw a pair years ago that I wanted but found out asics didn’t work for me and was so sad!
Heads up, I messed up TOTR topics and did that one last week so I will be doing last week’s this week. I’ll get back on track next week!
Bobby C. Nickles says
Love the dog! And I really love your shoes. It seems comfortable for a long run. The design is so cool. I wish I can find those shoes. I’m a little bit boring with my black and white shoes.
Teresa says
Okay…so your garden and shoes are fantastic! And having three children, at one time they were all at three different schools! I remember the ‘fruit basket turnover’ every morning for 2 years of trying to get them all to their perspective schools in proper uniform with book bags and lunches! Whew, I feel your pain! But it sounds like you were able to ‘recover’ with a nice long run! Have a great week 🙂
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
Love the new shoes! 61 degrees sounds amazing right now. Its actually only 65 here this morning which is the coolest it’s been in awhile I think! Sounds like a pretty solid week, whether or not you are marathon training, especially getting in that long run!
Erica @ Erica Finds says
I say if you don’t want to train for a full, do the half with gusto and come back to the full when you are more jazzed about it. Nothing is worse than training when your heart is not in it. Sorry, but those shoes… too much going on for this old school runner!
Lesley says
Those are come pretty colorful shoes! Could you defer the marathon if you’re not feeling it? It could also be you just need a little break after Ireland, and getting through the first couple weeks of back to school. I know our routines took a little bit to settle in once I was back at school.
Elle says
CUTEST shoes ever!
Karen - Fit in France says
School starts here on Sept. 1st. My kids both walk to school so I no longer have to do anything in the morning. I did take them school shopping… for notebooks and such. I put no pressure on myself to do anything else. Things will get done eventually. And if they really really need something, they will tell me.
Not sure what to say about the fall marathon fence. If I weren’t running NY but another one, I would probably think twice. WTH was I thinking entering that darn lottery ! Summer has completely thrown me off.
Karen says
Maybe the heat is sucking your joy a little like it was mine. A break in the weather will help the motivation 🙂 You can do it! I had my first less humid run this a.m. and it helped my soul tremendously! Still hot at 70 but minus the humidity it was nice. You had a good week, at least the long run got done 🙂
Those are great shoes.
That is nice the garden is growing so well!
MCM Mama Runs says
Well, I’m sitting where you are, except MCM does not have a half. I’m strongly considering selling my bib. I feel you.
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Those shoes!!! Wow, is all I can say, haha! I could never pull those off! And I am so jealous of your garden. When we gardened last year we could barely get anything to grow. I’m hoping with the house now we’ll be able to figure things out soon!
Michelle says
This weather IS lovely isn’t it??!! I hear you on the intervention….6 months of single parenting here, and I may lose my mind here soon, that is, if I haven’t already! LOL
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I’ve never gone all the way. 🙂
It kind of sounds like your heart isn’t in the marathon — and that’s a whole lot of training if it isn’t! But I do love the shoes.
Mr. Judy used to travel a lot for work, but thankfully almost nothing this year. Because seriously, if he’d had to travel during the whole Bandit fiasco I might just have shot him. I’m losing enough sleep when there’s 2 of us dealing with it!
Kristen says
Ugh yes, my post today was all about me being on the fence about doing a race this weekend – for months! I’m injured and knew I could hike the trail race if I had to, and that’s what I plan on doing. Part of me wanted to skip it until I can do better, but I’m just going for it. It’s going to be tough to decide if you want to do the full or just the half, so good luck making a decision!
Mary Beth Jackson says
That garden has gone wild- WOW! I am jealous! I can’t grow a rock right now- everything is sweating and melting! Thank God for my pineapple plants- they love it hot! I am loving those shoes! Nothing like a new pair of running shoes to make you feel like a champ. 15 miles though- ugh! I applaud you- that just does not sound fun!
Tricia says
Whoa those are pretty dang cool shoes! Asics ya don’t say?? I’m gonna have to look into them! So glad you got the break in heat and 61 and low humidity, boy doesn’t it make all the difference in the world? Thanks Marcia for linking up!
Gina says
You’ve run plenty of marathons!! You’re body will remember. 🙂 you got this! Having major shoe envy right now!! How awesome are those!! And that garden…. Holy cow Marcia!!
Larry dunn says
your garden is wonderful, don’t know what to say but i really want to have that one. 🙂 and you’re amazing, too. thanks for sharing !
Angela @marathonsandmotivation.com says
The run in 61 degree weather sounds glorious! It has been so hot and humid in Maine (of all places!) that I have had some miserable runs lately. I can’t wait of Fall Running Weather!! Which style of Asics are those…I have to have them!!! 🙂 thanks so much for linking up with us at Sunday Fitness & Food! Have a Great Week!

Love your shoes and those legs…WOW!!!!
