Before we get to the week’s ups and downs, here’s how my workouts went:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: 6 miles
Wednesday: Pool closed due to lightning so Strength & Yoga
Thursday: 4 miles
Friday: Rest
Saturday: 10 Miles
Sunday: Strength Training. Pool was packed so no swim again
Another week with zero swimming. With my triathlon 2 months away, it’s time to get serious about training. I’ve been biking and swimming pretty casually up to this point. That has to change. My back is feeling mostly ok, except it’s still fairly sore/tight the morning after a run day.
The first week back after vacation went ok…if you like it cold. Our furnace decided it was done forever. With 22 years of service, I guess it had done its time but still, having it get down to 50 in the house before the heating guys showed up was no picnic.
Thing 1’s high school track season is consuming me more than I’d like it to. The Jekyll & Hyde weather doesn’t help. Bright sunshine one minute, driving snow the next, and still way too cold. After 3 hours sitting in the wind at a track meet on cold bleachers, it began to pour. I’m so over the weather.
I got all carbed up the night before Chicago’s Perfect 10 race. As I looked outside the pizza place, grimacing at yet more snow, Emily texted me and told me she was considering bagging the Perfect 10. The seed was planted. When I woke to snow and 23 degrees before the windchill, I couldn’t drag myself downtown to shiver on the lakefront so it was official: I bagged as well. I felt a little remorse, but after reports of the Lakefront Path being filled with black ice and people slipping and twisting ankles, I think we made the right choice.
I got out for a consolation 10 miler on my own to make up for missing the race.
Saturday we had a family date night and saw My Big Fat Greek Wedding II (a little cheesy but still hilarious) with sushi after. Sunday the Caveman and I hit the gym then hunkered down for the final round of Masters golf.
This week: I’ll officially be following a triathlon training plan and getting my bike and swim on in a more serious manner. I’ll also be reboarding the healthy eating/no added sugar train.
How did your week go? Crazy weather? Ever bag a race? Did you enter my giveaway?
Tomorrow on Tuesdays on the Run we’re turning back time. We want to know what advice you’d give your “new runner” self. Join us! We can’t wait to hear your pearls of wisdom.

The weather in the Michigan tundra has been rough. Lots of snow recently, then sleet and now rain. And it’s super cold.
Still went out for all of my runs this week, so I have that going for me. 😉
Good decision on bagging the race; no sense in getting hurt and risking the season.
Take care and I hope they fix that pool so you can do that, too.
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
Thats so crazy that the conditions were so bad for the race! Where is spring? Sounds like you made a good choice skipping it. I’m excited to see how your training goes!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I think you made the right decision about the race. It was brutal yesterday. I hit a few icy patches around here on my 6 miler.
If you need company on your bike rides, please let me know! There will be some cross training continuing after Big Sur.
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
Mmmmm sushi! I bagged a trail race this winter cause it snowed. Just didn’t sound like fun to me!
Coco says
We had snow on Saturday but luckily not until AFTER my run. And it didn’t stick. I would DNS a race with slick conditions – not worth risking a sprained ankle or worse!
HoHo Runs says
The weather here was nice so I can’t complain (don’t smack me!). I would have skipped that race too. Nobody has time for injury. Kudos for doing getting in your consolation miles. I want to see that movie. I thought the first one was good — and Windex does take care of everything. Thanks for linking with us Marcia.

The caveman…. LOL 🙂 That gets me overtime! I’m with you on the weather! And….. what the HELL is up with the wind in the midwest? I’m going to have to move if spring doesn’t come around soon. My race on Saturday was 19 degrees. 19! Mother nature is clearly drunk.

Weather was crazy here in PA too this wkend. It snowed In April! That sushi looks delicious. I have been wanting to see that movie. I think I will wait for the Redbox.
Carla says
My sister lives right outside Chicago and is always begging me to move. After she sent a photo from this weekend I think… I never will:-)
Marsha says
Crazy weather for sure! Yes, I’ve bagged a race before! I’m running the Michelob Ultra half in Chicago in May. That’ll be a new one for me. Have you done that one?
Jennifer @ Dashing in Style says
That first picture is adorable! I think it was wise to skip the race. Trying to run on icy patches is dangerous!
Lesley says
I would’ve bagged too, especially with reports of ice. You don’t want to wrench your back this close to your tri. I did have to DNS a race a couple years ago, but I went down to cheer on my friends who were running it.
Sharon says
Sorry to hear about the crazy weather! Totally made the right decision on the 10miler. Not worth it if it’s dangerous out. That sushi looks delicious! I hope warmer weather goes your way and stays!
Emily @ Out and About says
No regrets on bagging the 10-miler! Not worth the effort to run the lakefront path in those types of conditions when you can run it anyday you want for free. Sorry to hear about the furnace’s passing – it sucks the weather has been SO bad this week on top of it. Talk about bad timing, right? Glad to hear your back is doing better and hoping you get back to 100% very soon! The sushi and pizza both look super yummy! That Master’s golf was filled with so much drama!!! I wasn’t watching when Jordan Spieth has his collapse but it must have been awful!
Kate says
The weather this year…sigh. It actually was ok to me this weekend. Saturday was chilly but not awful, and Sunday’s forecast of Thunderstorms (which at least belong in the spring) ended up being scarier than the reality. But still…I’m ready for some warmth!
Char says
Our weather’s been just as frustrating as yours. It’s been the endless summer. 30C days continuously for weeks. And I’d be okay with the heat if it wasn’t for the humidity. I reckon that we’ll get our change in seasons at the same time.
Karen says
Snow and ice would make me think twice for sure! I have not had that happen when I had a race scheduled. That stinks you had to miss it, but a good call. At least you got your own run in 🙂
I loved My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2! I was tickled everyone one of them made it back!
Darlene says
I envy everyone who is experiencing spring. I hate ice so I would have skipped it too. It has been cold and windy here. I am so ready for spring.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Sounds like the right call on skipping the race. I’m so with you on the weather – I’m just over it! And it is doing absolutely nothing to help my mojo and so-called training. Ah well, if it doesn’t snow this week I’ll consider it a small victory.
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
I really hate that yall are dealing with Mother N like you are. Won’t she just make up her mind? I would so be with you in ditching the 10mile race in those conditions. You made up for it so no worries!
We have gas logs and we don’t have to use them for our main source of heat but we like to sit in front of them when it’s cold. We’ve been out of propane for a month and I just can’t bring myself to pay to get the tank filled when it will just sit there all summer.
Karen - Fit in France says
I think you made a good decision with the crappy weather. No need to get hurt.
I am ready for spring too even though I am travelling at the moment so my life is full of treadmilss, so it really doesn’t matter much…
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Mmmmm . . . sushi! And that picture of the dogs is just precious.Although they probably didn’t appreciate the cold much either.
Yes, the weather has been horrendous here, too, but they keep saying that’s gonna change — soon! Otherwise there just might be rioting.
Nope, I’ve never bagged a race. But a snowy, slushy one has definitely slowed me way down! Especially since you still have some back pain, I think you made the right choice.
Meagan says
Good luck on getting back into the swing of things with the bike and swim! I wish the weather would even out, too, and we could just enjoy some nice spring weather. Lately we seem to be swinging from winter to summer and back again. Sounds like y’all made the right decision to skip that race – black ice is no good! Glad you were still able to get your 10 in on your own.
