When I returned home from spring break I told myself I’d wait a week or 3 before hoisting my over-fed self….er I mean hopping, that’s it, hopping…. on the scale. I didn’t exactly push any food away, after all.
But just a day or so after returning, according to the way my pants fit and the paces my Garmin displayed, I got the impression the scale might not be so bad.
Know what? I was right! Before I left I was down a total of 7 lbs. (2 of those lost from being sick and appetite-free for the better part of a week so they don’t count). After 10 days of eating with wild abandon?
I gained back only one of the being-sick pounds so no real weight gain for the WIN!
What do I attribute this to?
- Lots and lots of walking. We walked 7-10 miles most days.
- Use the fitness center.
- Run in port. Use Map My Run to chart a safe route.
- Take the stairs. Cruise ships are full of them and we took full advantage.
- Minimal alcohol. I had 2 glasses of wine, which is actually more than I drink in a typical week. But many, many people partake of far more alcohol than I.
- Mostly seafood for dinner. To make room for all those chocolate desserts, wink wink!

It’s not all sweetness and light. My sweet tooth is back with a vengeance. Which leads me to my next topic. Spring Cleaning. I need to get my diet back on point.
Spring Cleaning
I’m joining Tamieka, Sarah and Lex for the Thursday Throwdown Linkup where the topic is Spring Cleaning. I’m also linking up with Amanda over at Running with Spoons for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.
Mostly I’ll be spring cleaning my diet and working to reboard the no added sugar train. But also this:
I’ve been noticing lots of road rage lately. One particularly bad incident started at a simple 4-way stop in a parking lot. They guy in front of me and the guy off to the left both felt it was their turn to go, so they both went and neither would back down. They stalled and chased and jammed on the breaks in front of each other. I missed the light because of their antics but was happy they went well ahead of me. About a mile up the road though, there they were again, only headed in the opposite direction. They were stopped actually because they’d crashed with a tractor/trailer flat bed truck was involved. Part of me wanted to pull over and wait for the cops so I could tattle on these two arses. I mean really. So incredibly stupid. Over a freaking stop sign. I get that drivers do stupid things every day. I get more than my fill of tailgaters when I’m doing well over the limit. We all need to breathe, “spring-clean” our mindset and consider the consequences. It’s not worth it. Choose kindness.
How are you spring cleaning this season: Physically? Mentally? Any travel weightloss tips?

That road rage incident is ridiculous! But it’s bad. I was driving on 53 last week. Someone wanted to merge in ahead of me and I wouldn’t let him. He gave me the finger and tailed me all the way to my destination. I was going to call 911 if he followed me into the parking lot. I’m not quite sure why he thought he was entitled to merge in ahead of me. I also need to back away from that kind of challenge. Stupid on my part and dangerous too. Sometimes I just hate people. :p

That’s what I heard about my friends backpacking through Europe. They ate EVERYTHING but was able to not gain any weight due to all the walking they did
Darlene says
Congrats on maintaining your weight during a cruise. That’s amazing!
We are focusing on fitness at work so they delivered 9 dozen doughnuts today!! WTH?
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
That is awesome Marcia! You know I find myself being super lax on the diet on vacation, but since we are very active vacationers, it usually evens out like yours did!
Christine @ Two Runners Travel says
Mmmmmm that chocolate dessert looks ah-mazing!! I love dessert. I will probably never give up sugar because I just love sweets. And I figure as long as I don’t eat them everyday, it’s all good in the hood. Great giveaway too! I’m not entering b/c I’m still a little anxious about signing up for races while I’m on the road to recovery. π
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
Just when you think you’re doing good the scale says otherwise, then again just when you think you blew it, it smiles up to you! I hate that damn thing! It does not have a very good sense of humor!
Doing the little things really does add up. I’m so glad you enjoyed that part of the trip! Hope all is well on the other things!
Tamieka says
OMG…over a stop sign! So freaking ridiculous!!!
the joys and woes of the cruise ship amenities!! The last one I went on, we sat with a couple who let’s say enjoys food. We found out from them that we are able to order more than one dinner entree and of course we had to verify this info-lol!! Needless to say, I did not do as well as you and my weight gain was in the ++. Good job using those stairs and getting in some runs!
Uggh the sweet tooth. After doing so well for Lent…it is back with vengeance!! I start a new training on Monday so going to work on severe limitations if not exclusion…we will see. BTW-that dessert looks so yummy!!
I tore my ACL a few moments after completing a Spartan race and have been traumatized ever since….;( They are so much fun though!
THANK YOU soooo much for linking up with us today….your support is so appreciated!!!

It’s still a bummer you had to be sick. But Hooray for the weight loss!
I am one of those weird people that always loose weight on cruises too, and not because I am sick. I just hate cruise food, LOL
Spartan races look so fun, I have a few local friends who do the hard core course, in Utah we have one of the extreme ones and wow I have to give them credit because most people finished bruised or broken. They cross train and build up muscle mass so much in advance and fortunately other than bruises haven’t been injured. I have to admire anyone who gives them a try!
Mary Beth Jackson says
good job on the cruise diet! I am impressed! The alcohol part gets me- but I can pass that dessert tray pretty easily π Road rage- don’t get me started my state fills up with non driving, sight seeing, we have no idea where we are going- ERRRRRRRR
Cassi says
Great job keeping your activities up while on the cruise!
Kimberly Hatting says
“Scale” should be a 4-letter word. And, I say that as a tall, slim gal who has no business complaining. My scale is SOOO inaccurate, I honestly don’t know why I even bother stepping on it (I can step on it three times, and get three different numbers). As you know, I have been stair-climbing like crazy the past couple months…and my weight has gone up a few pounds. All of my clothing fits the same…except my skinny jeans are getting “tight” near my calves. SO, yeah, I realize the weight gain is probably muscle, but no one likes to see the numbers going up LOL
Laura @ Mommy Run Fast says
It’s funny, but with the extra walking (and less snacking) I almost always eat better on vacation and lose a few pounds. Then I get back to my normal and gain them back! Glad you had a great time!
Sarah says
My sweet tooth is back with a vengeance too! Spring cleaning for the palate!
Congrats on keeping on track during the cruise!
Thanks for linking up for #ThrowdownThursday!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
You did great keeping the weight gain to a minimum on the cruise (how are the back & ankle, btw?). I’ve cruised — it’s not easy. The stairs thing is one my tricks — unless I’m in heels, never, ever take the elevator.
The other is to avoid the buffets like the plague!
Spartan race? Totally not my thing.
Seth @ Giveaway Guy says
I’ve got my eyes on the Fenway Park race.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
A cruise and no weight gain – I love it! Nice job.
The road rage is just out of control lately – I’ve seen some pretty ridiculous things lately. Leaves me shaking my head.
Char says
Great work on managing your weight while you were away. And to do it without really depriving yourself is a real win!
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
Congrats on the weightless! Alcohol is definitely my downfall on vacation, but it helps to keep exercising and walking alot!
Elle says
That is awesome… one pound! So glad things are getting back to normal for you!
alexandra @ my urban family says
Congrats π I always feel better about indulging a little extra while on vacation because I always seem to be walking everywhere!
Lex @ Flecksoflex says
Oh my gosh! That is such a dumb road rage incident! I hope they use them as an example for driving schools! Thanks for linking up with us! I love reading about you eating with “wild abandon” on your cruise. It’s so hard not to. That was my brother and his best friend when our family went on a cruise! “I’ll have the filet mignon AND the lobster, sir.”
Karen - Fit in France says
Eating on vacation is always challening… but it is also the perfect opportunity to up exercising time. Glad everything turned out ok !
Michelle B. @dreaminofmysoldier says
Way to go on losing weight while on vacation! I am NEVER that lucky. (We always go on road trips and that involves wayyyyy too much snacking even on healthy food.)
Spartan races look so intense! I want to do one soooooooooooo bad. I would either want to do the Boise Sprint or Portland Sprint. I want to try the Sprint first before trying anything more intense.
Nicole says
I want to run the race in Barre, MA in June
Jody - Fit at 58 says
I saw all you did on vacation so not surprised you came thru it so well! π
Road rage – normal here!!! Unfortunately!
KM says
I would love to try the AT&T Park Sprint in San Francisco!
Michelle says
I can never seem to maintain a steady weight, vacation or not. I bounce around 2-3 lbs LOL! Great job lady!!!!!
Zenaida Arroyo says
I always gain weight during a vacation. So that is why I do not go on vacation. π
Ugh, road rage is ridiculous!!! I take the easy way out and let others go. You want to go first? Sure, go ahead. You want to merge in ahead of me? Sure, go.
Karen says
I am glad you had fun and came away unscathed π You got to live. All the walking is a great thing about a vacation! I love being able to putt around all day!
