Here’s how the week in workouts went:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: 2 mile run as part of HIIT intervals
Wednesday: Yoga and Swim
Thursday: Ran 5 miles
Friday: Strength and Swim
Saturday: Run 7 miles
Sunday: Killer Strength
It was another single parenting week. Relative to last year when the Caveman spent the month of January in China, I can’t complain. Our sub-zero temps moderated to a very tolerable 20-something, allowing for outdoor running workouts, and it’ll be even warmer this week. I’ll take it.
Workouts: More Running or Less?
I’ve been pretty good about changing up my workouts and focusing on strength and swim this “off-season,” but part of me wanted to build more base mileage because I feel like being in half marathon shape all year makes fall marathon training easier. Last year I kept my running miles low early in the year while I focused on tri training and I think that came back to haunt me later. Blame it on flagging endurance and/or my weightloss initiative, but my runs lately have been a snail’s-pace, leaden struggle, so on one hand I’m happy to not have the pressure of official training, but on the other, a spring half marathon would be nice.
My biggest workout victory this week was making it to the pool twice. That’s no small task for this self-professed aqua-phobe. Neither swim was pretty, and my swim endurance leaves much to be desired, but any swim is a win at this point.
It was Figure Skating Championships week. I say it every year, this is my Super Bowl. Lots of time was spent on the couch yelling at the TV. The ladies outcome was epic. Historic. A skate for the ages. I could not have been happier to see Gracie Gold put it all together when the pressure was on and throw it down. It’s also pretty cool to have so many skaters there from this area. The announcer said Northern Illinois is a hotbed of figure skating talent. He got that right.
How was your week? Did you get gobs of snow? Did you race? Watch football? Figure skating?
Tomorrow on Tuesdays on the Run we’re talking about Oldies but Goodies: Running Gear you’d buy all over again. Tell us about your all-time favorites!
This Friday and the last Friday of every month is Runfession Friday. Spill your run-, gym-, swim- heck any confessions will do and link them up here. I promise you’ll feel so much better.

End of the month already!? That happened fast.
Great job on the swimming. A spring half marathon sounds great 🙂
Carla says
Girl. That single parenting time, however, is certainly a marathon with in itself!!!
Christine @ Two Runners Travel says
Every year I say I’ll do more swimming and never do. I was a competitive swimmer in high school and college and for some reason, it’s really unappealing to me now. But it’s such a great workout! I totally missed the figure skating this year but it sounded like the women’s competition was fierce. Have a great week!
Becky @ Ok, So Here's the Plan says
We only ended up getting about 8 inches of snow (rather than the 18 they thought we were going to get) this weekend, which was plenty.
I have been debating switching up my training plan, I have been feeling lazy and sluggish even though I’ve been getting all my runs in.
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I watched the figure skating championship and was excited to see Bradie from Crystal Lake! Who knew that they all trained so close to home? Well, besides you… I do love watching this competition. It was great.
nicole says
I have to say I love figure skating though I hardly ever watch it. I wish I could skate. Great job with the pool. I wish I swam more too
Maureen says
When I was a teenager I LOVED to watch figure skating! I still do, just not as much. But once the Olympics are one, I can spend hours in front of the TV!
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
Nice job making it to the pool twice! It seems like getting to the pool is such a pain for everyone! I admire the people that make it a point to go, though.
Michelle says
Sounds like a great week! I am signed up for the Rockford full, and just completed week one of training. We will see how the next few months pan out, but I will at least do the half.
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
Yes to lots of snow here! I didn;t mind skipping a few runs but I’m not looking forward to all the ice that is now forming on the streets and sidewalks. Nice job getting to the pool!
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner says
oh I didn’t realize that skating was on I would have watched that! Yes tons of snow it was fun for 2 days I am now over it.
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
Gracie Gold’s free skate was just incredible!!
Margo says
We were slammed with the snow but I had to teach both mornings so tell me how fair that is? I wanted to have a snow day like everyone else!
alexandra @ my urban family says
I am loving that Chicago didn’t get snow this weekend and for once it’s everyone else talking about shoveling! ha 🙂 And I definitely plan on swimming more this summer but I just can’t seem to get myself to do it when it’s cold out, even inside.
Lesley says
I don’t watch football anymore, and a friend wants to go see an Oscar-nominated movie. I’d rather watch football, lol. We did that last year with Foxcatcher and I was bored out of my mind. I want to suggest classic movies since those are always fun.
Darlene says
Ice skating is my favorite sport to watch. Gracie Gold was AMAZING!!!
Congrats on getting in the pool. I’m cool thinking about getting wet.
We got zero snow but a few hours south got a few feet.
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I haven’t watched figure skating in years, I used to really enjoy it! Nice job on your workouts, especially making it to the pool! That’s definitely holding me back from ever doing a tri.
Amber B says
I should check out Figure skating! I love watching most sports on tv and I’m sure skating would be just as AH!-inducing. I really need to go for a swim. I haven’t in years, and although I’m not a good swimmer, I love being in water! I mostly just run and get some gym workouts in every other day. I need to get more active, though!
Becki S says
We grew up watching the championship in our house too! Love it. Glad you’re having fun in the pool (or at least trying)!
Pete B says
Endurance seems to be the hardest thing for me to get back after a prolonged break from running. But after a few months of hitting the roads it eventually comes back.
Emily @ Out and About says
I took figure skating lessons as a child, so I used to watch a lot of skating on TV but haven’t recently. It’s such a beautiful sport, though! Congratulations on getting your swims in! I always say the hardest part about working out is getting out the door, and swimming requires so much more pre-workout prep than running does. Way to push through!
Char says
I’d love it if we got to see more ice skating on TV. The sport is exciting but for me it’s the added bonus of the costumes that I enjoy.
Sharon says
Great job getting in some swimming! Looks like a good week of workouts! I didn’t catch the figure skating championships but do enjoy watching it’s hard when Hubby hogs the tv with his football and dvr’d basketball games. Oh well. :p
HoHo Runs says
Congrats on two swims! I always had to MAKE myself go to the pool. I hate I missed the ice skating championships. It is my favorite thing to watch during the Winter Olympics. A spring half marathon would be nice for me too! Do you have a race in mind? I know I’m going to be at a snail’s pace after the six months I’ve been through. I guess that gives me something to focus on. Thanks for linking with us Marcia!
Margo says
My classes were half full. Its nice to get paid but I would have loved to have slept in!
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
Way to hit that pool! I did pretty well last week, but I’m really looking forward to getting back to running this week!
fairytales and fitness says
I haven’t watched figure skating in years. I did enjoy it though when I watched. I gave up ice skating when I started running cus I was afraid of getting hurt. Now that i’m not currently training for anything I may put on my skates again!
Coco says
We watched the football games yesterday. The only excitement in the Panthers game was guessing how high the score would get.
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
I spent lots of couch time watching figure skating while snowed in this weekend. It was perfect timing with the blizzard.
MCM Mama Runs says
I don’t swim. I don’t like putting my head under water. End of story. ;o)
My running sucks right now and the 50,000 feet of snow aren’t helping. Just saying.
Jenn says
Great week for you! I think your mileage plan is spot on, and you will do awesome when marathon training comes around again.
Barely any snow, very little football, and it’s been years since I watched figure skating. I used to love it, but I don’t ever seem to watch much tv on the weekends. I’ll have to keep an eye out for it.
Tiffany @ The Chi-Athlete says
Woot woot on the second swim! I hear ya’ there.:)
jill conyers says
WTG with 2 swims! No race, no snow, no figure skating and no football. Practiced yoga, read about yoga and practiced teaching yoga on my family. Loving it all!
Kim Hatting says
I totally missed the figure skating …..I used to skate (a little) when I was a kid, but never had lessons, and certainly was not a “figure skater” by any means. But, it was one of very few sports that my awkward and klutzy body could actually perform. I have a couple events on my calendar, but nothing farther than a 10K…I need to find (and commit) to a half marathon (or longer). I could probably squeak out 13.1 miles, but I need something to work towards…..and I’m in search of a potential marathon for late spring/early summer…any suggestions? I’m doing the Xmas in July, so a “long” race a month or so prior would fit nicely in my schedule 😉
Lex @ Flecksoflex says
I love how elegant and beautiful figure skating is; however, I have absolutely no idea what I would yell at the screen! All that I can say is “oooh” and “ahhhhh!” 😉
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
Hey great job on making it to the pool twice! What? Where did the month go? Gosh, I feel like I was just in Disney! I do have some Runfessions so I better get to writing them down! Thank you Marcia for linking and all your support! Appreciate you!
Mary Beth Jackson says
Look at you with 2 swims in! You look fierce in those googles! I love to watch figure skating, sorry I missed all that! Happy hump day!
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
Great job getting to the pool! I know that would be an ongoing battle for me. We have pretty much been snowed in until yesterday from the snow storm. In fact the kids are STILL out on snow days and won’t be going back til Monday! Can you believe that SEVEN snow days?!! Seriously I need a wine IV, I can’t take it any more, lol.
