This week’s Tuesdays on the Run topic is Goals. Running or otherwise. I talked about my goals here. Now stop the presses. It’s my blogiversary. This blog is 7 years old. That’s geriatric by social media standards.
When I started this labor of love, Things 1 and 2 were 3 and 7 years old respectively. Now I’ve got a tween and a teen. I’d been tossing around the idea of a blog in my head for awhile. I figured I’d journal my efforts to run toward a Boston Qualifier. But I procrastinated starting the blog (what else is new?) and the BQ happened before the blog started. So the blog focus shifted toward training for my first Boston Marathon in 2009.
Back then this blog was called Running Off at the Mouth. I started it while I sat home one day waiting for the refrigerator repair guy. My first post was a whopping 52 words. It’d be awhile before I’d include pictures of any kind.
A year later when I qualified for Boston again, I was referred to around the blogosphere as The Studly Runner and a new blog name was born.
In 2012 the Studly Runner evolved into Marcia’s Healthy Slice.
Over the years, running and this blog have taken me on adventures I never could have imagined. It’s been a wild ride:
I was invited to run the Puerto Rico Marathon, The Jerusalem Marathon, The Great Wall Marathon, the Blue Ridge Marathon, the Hood to Coast Relay and the TransRockies Run with Dean Karnazes.
I ran Rock n Roll Chicago on the Chocolate Milk Refuel Team with “The Bachelor” Dr. Andy Baldwin as my “date”.
I spoke at the Women’s Running Telesummit.
I was interviewed in Boston about the marathon and appeared on the local NBC news.
I’ve met countless running luminaries, including, “The Pengiun”, John Bingham, Bart Yasso, Meb, Dean Karnazes, the Hoyts, Katherine Switzer Ryan and Sara Hall and more.
The best part? The reason I keep on going? YOU. I’ve met so many really wonderful people. I cherish the relationships. I know for many, the goal with blogs is to grow and make money. That’s not why I started and it’s never been my goal. Sure I make enough money here to support my running and destination race habit, not to mention hosting and other blog-related costs. But the content comes from my heart. I don’t worry about what others want, this is my place for expression.
Who knows what the future holds for Marcia’s Healthy Slice? I’d love to finally finish out the Marathon Majors one of these years. Beyond that, the adventure continues!
Where has running and/or blogging taken you?
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
Wow, 7 years is a long time to be blogging! So glad you stuck with it:) Happy Blogiversary!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Congrats on 7 yrs! That IS ancient in the blogosphere. I’m almost at 7 months & who knows? I tend to be a bit of a butterfly when it comes to hobbies, but this is my third blog & I’ve definitely found my tribe so hopefully I’ll stick with it.
I won’t lie, I would love to make some money, since I’m no longer working, but it still comes from my heart.
So keep at it because I love reading about your adventures!
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
Your blog is as old as my cat! That’s pretty cool ๐ I don’t really have any running goals this year, other than to just be able to run again. I’m pouring my energies into my clients, so helping them achieve THEIR goals will be my big accomplishment.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Happy Blogiversary! Yours was one of the very first blogs I started following when I got into running and it’s till one of my faves ๐
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
That’s amazing! I see blogs come and go in less than a year…and here you are! Don’t go anywhere. I would never have met you without your blog! Best thing ever.

Happy 7 years! It’s so cool that we meet all these people through our blogs, right? And I bet you’ve met a lot who’ve come in gone, with blogging, but you still keep in touch with (that’s happened to me, anyway)!
Did you decide not to do the Great Wall Marathon?
Erica @ Erica Finds says
That is amazing! Thank you for all of your help and humor. I love your blog! For me, the unintended consequence of blogging is all of the real life friends I have met and experiences I’ve had. I had NO Idea! Plus all of the awesome freebies. Your list is impressive (and so are you!). I enjoy your healthy slice and hope you will keep it up!
Darlene says
Yes, I have been following you all 7 years!
I started blogging almost 8 years ago. My first post was the day I decided to start running…my goal was to run a 5k but I got addicted to running.
The first 2 years, I only ran sporadically and not in the winter – 100 miles & 200 miles each year. This past year I ran 7 halfs and 969 miles.
I love blogging – wish I didn’t work so I would have more time to put into my posts.
Love your blog – keep it up!!
Michelle says

I love this post! Congrats on 7 years! You are right, that is a long time by social media standards. You’ve been able to do some amazing things via your blog. That is the same with us! We never started a blog to make money. Heck, I didn’t even know one COULD make money blogging. It certainly is nice to make a little to go towards hosting fees and giveaways and such but is never our main focus.
Leana says
Happy blogiversary Marcia! It sounds like you’ve had some really amazing experiences over your seven year journey. All the best for 2016!
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
Happy Blogiversary to you Marcia!!! Seven years, wow, do you find that just about the time you get the hang of SEO and analytics, they change it? Did you do all that when you first started? I like the name Running off at the Mouth and Studly Runner, now what’s the story behind that? You have been invited to a lot of runs! You are a wealth of knowledge not to mention, fun and entertaining and I hope you have many more years to come! ๐
Tamieka@ Fitballingrunningmom says
Whho hoo!!! Happy blogiversary! How amazing your blog journey is!!!
I am a newer blogger (started in March) but have enjoyed every minute of it so far! I have earned a few ambassadorships from my blog and hope to continue to reach others and open to great opportunities ๐
Congratulations again….I am excited to continue to watch you grow and develop!

Congrats on 7 years! That is amazing! ๐ I think they said the average life is 2.5 years! Thanks for sharing a little of the history, it is nice to know that we all have had a few changes or growing pains ๐
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I loved reading this because as a relatively new reader to your blog, it was very cool to get the “back story”. It is so interesting that your blog had a couple different names. ๐ I wonder if I will ever change my blog’s name? I am almost at 3 years of blogging, but it seems longer! Hey, I was at Boston in 2009 too! Maybe we crossed paths and didn’t know it!
Karen says
Happy Bloganniversary ๐ I really enjoy following your adventures and getting to know you through the blog and other social medias ๐
That is fantastic you get to travel to races and do fun things because of your blog!
I have been blogging a few years, mostly to connect with others since my real life fitness friends are few. It took me awhile to catch on with the link ups and other ways to connect. I am still learning! I have a long way to go lol
Brandi @ Java & Sole says
