It was a busy Halloween weekend. Single parenting made it even moreso.
Two sleepovers (one here) a teenager party (not here thank heavens) pumpkin carving, trick or treat and a morning-after Halloween pancake breakfast kept me hopping. The mom taxi worked overtime. This was all compounded by ghastly Halloween weather: Cold, raw and rainy. The all-day downpour Saturday subsided to a drizzle for trick or treat hours so I can’t complain too much. We’re at the point where Thing 2 doesn’t even want me with her when she trick or treats with her friends. I did my best to supervise and hang back about 50 yds. #skillz
Sunday I flipped pancakes for the kids and all the friends, while watching NYCM coverage. I can’t believe an entire year has passed since I ran it. Watching made me crave another major marathon. London and Berlin are still hanging out there, unfinished business…
In other news I may have been caught watching Youtube and practicing the Whip and Nae Nae. I suspect it was the subject of a snap chat but can’t be sure. Clearly the sugar was taking its toll.
Crappy Halloween weather means fewer trick or treaters and more leftover candy. The kids generously gave me my own personal bowl of their rejects. Just what I need, a personal candy stash. All the nutty things, mostly. I was not a Snickers fan as a kid but as an “older” person, I can’t imagine how anyone can pass up the chocolaty pillow of deliciousness that is the peanut butter Snickers.
Although RnR Vegas is less than 2 weeks away, I’m treating this as my running “off-season” and focusing more on strength and flexibility than anything else. ExceptΒ this past week I noticed my left hip is not a happy camper. This is the same one that gave me trouble in 2011, leading me to DNS the Philadelphia Marathon and Twin Cities (yes, Twin Cities this year was redemption).
Here’s the aha moment: When I hurt my hip in 2011, I was also doing all the “right” hip strengthening/lateral stability moves that I’ve been doing now. So what gives? For the record, there was no absolute moment that it abruptly started to hurt. It just sort of came on all sneaky-like. As a precautionary measure, and because I was up to my eyeballs herding kids, I did not run this weekend. Part of me fears the hip will be a problem. Part of me is giving it time to calm down.
Enough of the hip gloom and doom. Did you know it’s officially Christmas at the mall? It kind of was before Halloween but now it’s officially official. It makes me feel pressured to shop. I’m sure that’s exactly what they intended.
What was fun for you this weekend? Do you enjoy candy “rejects”? Do you embarrass your kids? Do you whip and nae nae?
HoHo Runs says
My grandson whip and nae naes. At 5, he keeps me uber cool. My hip gives me fits sometimes. Anytime I’ve tried to do strengthening exercises, it makes it worse. I miss trick or treating because my kids gave me the mounds and almond joy. Sometimes you feel like a nut…sometimes you don’t… Thanks for linking!
carrie@familyfitnessfood.com says
I’ve got a cranky hip too. It’s beyond annoying at this point. And I’m a most embarassing mom to my teenager. Sometimes it bugs me, but mostly I think I’ve earned it.
Debra says
My students love the Whip and Nae Nae. I don’t know where to begin when it comes to dancing. I like to try in the privacy of my own home when my husband’s not around. I watched the NYC marathon coverage. I can’t imagine running with 50,000 other people. St. Jude has been my largest race to date and I think it only attracts 10,000-15,000 including the 5K, half, and full marathon. I hope your hip feels better soon.
Jill says
I have zero clue what Whip and Nae Nae is. Of course!
Karen @ Fit in France says
Halloween has come to France but not in the proportions of the US (it is a US holiday!). The kids like to dress up but few people come to the door, and its usually only friends of my children. We had 5 on Saturday. I can not believe Xmas decorations are up already ? How in the heck did that happen ? It starts here Dec. 1st, maybe a bit sooner. Hope your hip is feeling better. Mine hurt for a while and my orthodics fixed that niggle !
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Luckily the fur kids don’t get embarrassed; except maybe when you baby talk to them.
How can anyone ever hate a snickers? Seriously! But we no longer hand out candy – just turn off the lights & watch something on my ipad in the bedroom.
Probably the highlight of my weekend was my retail therapy. Sad, but I needed that.
I hope your hip cooperates. It’s a race to treat as a fun run anyway (too many people to weave around!).
CARLA says
OH I SO SO HAD A COMMENT UNTIL I SAW THAT JILL HAS NO IDEA WHAT THE WHIP AND NAE NAE IS.
!!!!!!!!
We must enlighten her π
Mary Beth Jackson says
LOL! If you are not getting the MOM!!!! comment from our kids then I figure I am not living right! π Sounds like a fun weekend! I do for the first time a little candy left, mainly Almond Joy and a few Nerds. When I went to Walmart to grab the Halloween carving kit the stuff was gone and Christmas was out! Seriously…….UGGG- I am not ready yet! and the fact that it is still in the high 80’s every day does not help! Happy Monday!
Kelli says
Hope the hip thing stays calm. Have you been to a massage therapist to work the area? I’ve had issues with my hip in the past. Once was a month long bout of piriformis syndrome. I massaged with a golf ball to no avail and then a two week break from running (unintentional, due to a business trip followed by getting sick) seemed to nip it in the bud. Hope your rest helps cure any niggles. Also, I boycotted Halloween here. . We have such a small neighborhood and most of the kids are grown – I didn’t want candy in my house. We kept the porch lights off and watched TV in the basement. Good thing I didn’t have candy here. I’m eyeing up those Baby Ruth in the stash of candy!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I’d love to Whip and Nae Nae but I fear that it isn’t going to be part of my repertoire…remember, I’m still trying to master the Electric Slide…
I sure hope that hip calms down! What do you think it is?
Bri says
I still don’t know what that whip/nae nae thing is and I don’t want to know! Haha! We had zero trick or treaters this year π Oh well, more candy left for us! π
Laura@ Fit Running Mama says
Oh my God, crappiest weather ever on Saturday but it didn’t stop my lady from running house to house!!! Yesterday was amazing and the weather this week is going to be perfect!!!! We’ve been known to whip/nae nae every now and then in our house too… without the sugar rush!!! Snickers is awesome… how can anyone NOT like it!!!
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I looooooooooooove Christmas (hell, I named my cat Christmas!) so I am very ready for Christmas to take over everything! I know I am in the minority, though. I’m okay with that!
Michelle says
I do not understand the whip nae thing, or snap chat. Insert #manifeeloldhere now. LOL!
Carmy says
I WISH I had reject candy over here! Despite the rain, the trickortreaters went strong
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Despite the weather, it looks like you had a fun Thanksgiving weekend. We didn’t do anything special, just went for a run and watched the World Series at night. We’ve got no Halloween candy! So funny, I still don’t know what this whip and nae-nae is…but I’m okay with that!
Darlene says
Haven’t mastered the whip/nae nae thing. And I don’t like Snickers. I’m a Kit Kat fan. I ran the 5k in NYC on Saturday and watched the marathon on TV on Sunday – almost made me want to run it.
Deborah @ Confessions of a Mother Runner says
I have to get rid of this candy too-it just calls my name!! So jealous that you are doing RnR Vegas it’s my favorite half.
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
I know what the Whip Nae Nae is but I could not tell you how to do it, and that is probably a good thing! I’m afraid I’d be scouting YouTube for it too! I loved being in NOLA this weekend, but I did miss being home for the trick or treating that we have done in a subdivision. I was tickled pink I did not have any real issues running this past weekend, even more happy I could walk down the steps in the Super Dome! The only thing that told me I had run the day before was my tight hips. I hope yours turn out fine. Maybe it was a good thing you didn’t get a chance to run on them this weekend. As far as candy goes I heard candy 50% off is straight from the devil! π Have a great week Marcia, thanks again for linking up!
Jenn says
Sounds like fun! We had a blast this weekend: a birthday party, a Halloween party, trick or treating, a movie, and lots and lots of candy. I neither Whip, nor Nae Nae, but little man was singing and dancing in the back of the car the other day, so that was pretty epic.
Sharon says
Haha love the whip-nae-nae but would look silly doing it. Only cute when I see kids do it! Glad to hear the downpour stopped for trick or treating! My kiddos gave me a bowl of rejects too. It wasn’t much but sad to say it is almost gone. Oops. :p I think I will have to hide their candy soon and say it needs to be packed for the big move! π
Margo says
My Halloween was very chill this year. We don’t have kids coming into the building to trick or treat so I stay in and we watch movies instead, π
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
I definitely need to see you whip and nae nae :). I hope your hip is feeling better!
MCM Mama Runs says
My hip/groin is bothering me again. I’ve been getting so up close and personal with my addaday stick that I almost feel like I should buy it a drink first…
On the bright side, Christmas hitting the scene means a I bought 5 six packs of holiday beer today. ;o)
Alexandra @ My Urban Family says
This cracks me up! As much as I dislike that song I cannot seem to get it out of my head! Also, I’m amazed that anyone would willingly give up a Snickers!
Elle says
Me either… what’s Whip, Nae Nae? Anyway, the trick or treaters had a pretty nice evening and then about 10 p.m. the monsoons started and it POURED and BLEW all night long… which was actually fine with me cause it kept the mischief to a minimum. I am glad it’s all over!
Amy @ Will Run For Ice Cream says
Sorry about the hip.. I hear ya on the sneaking up part.. my hammy is letting me know it’s still there. Really.. it’s been awhile.. I’m over the hamstring thing!
Hope your hip goes quiet soon! I know it’s frustrating. P.S. I LOVE snickers π
Lesley says
I was at a reception, otherwise I would’ve stocked up on candy, in case my apartment complex has trick-or-treaters. It was a low-key night, which was nice. Halloween morning was busy, but I got to run so a good busy.
Julia @ Lord Still Loves Me says
Did you make those jack-o-lanterns in the first picture? They are amazing! You are so talented, Marcia.
And as a sophomore in college, I, with my head down, say yes, I do nae-nae.
Char says
It’s Christmas here too. Apparently. I could ignore the decorations but once they start playing the music I get really pissy. And funnily enough it was the topic of a Facebook comment in 2011. Four years on and the stores haven’t bowed to my displeasure.
Markita@Sweshfit says
Find that video! Would love to see you whip and nae nae haha…love those videos.
Coco says
We had good weather but still only a few trick-or-treaters. We live at the top of a steep hill on a cul-de-sac so I think a lot of kids just don’t bother! I used to not like any candy with nuts but now I do make an exception for Snickers.
Becky @ Ok, so here's the plan says
This is all I can think of when people talk about the whip/nae nae song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNT0GUwDkVw
We don’t get trick or treaters in our neighborhood, we’re too rural. On the bright side, that means we don’t have bags of leftover candy to tempt me.
Wendy @ Wholistic Woman says
I have no idea what whip and nae nae is. I also do not understand the idea of reject candy. I love ALL THE CANDY, which is why I run LOL
jill conyers says
This is hilarious! I must see you whip and nae nae haha!
Natalie says
I have never heard of whip and nae nae!! Ha! π
We donate almost all of our candy to the soldiers overseas.
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
Oh no!! I hope that hip feels better! Rest up! As for the whip and nae nae….my son sings that daily and I just don’t get it. I haven’t looked up the dance to it yet, lol. Maybe we can learn in Vegas, LOL π
Patty @ Reach Your Peak says
lol at the whip nae nae dance. I HATED that song when I first hear dit and now it has grown on me and I want to learn the dance too lol. I Also watched NYCM and cant wait to be at the starting line next year!!
Safari @ Tri-ing To Run Boston says
oh my…looks like you have ALL the DELISH candy in your reject bowl and I agree…sneaker peanut butter?!? I love ALL things peaNUT butter. Lol. Took my girls trick or treating…didn’t really want to but really had no choice. Weather was perfect here and I was able to get in my steps for the day. #winning π
elizabeth says
we did the whip and nae nae during our first dance!! :):) and agree, snickers are the best. random- have you had, or do you get, massages? or see a chiro? maybe something is just a little off.
