I’d so hoped not to have to go the grocery store again today. The three I went to on my quest for fresh thyme yesterday were a zoo. Everyone seems to be off this entire week. Us? It’s business as usual for the Caveman who commutes into the city. Thing 1 still has school while Thing 2 has been off since her short day on Monday. So I’ve got the best of both worlds: taxiing the teen while entertaining the “bored” tween.
Thanks to the kindness of a neighbor who snipped some from his herb garden, I finally got the elusive thyme. But what I still need to get is whipped cream. Silly me thought the can I had left over from the Costco 3-banger pack I dragged home last year might be fresh. As if. For the record, it’s not sour but it’s lost it’s fluffy nature so out it went.
I’ll be the first to admit I’ve got a “colorful” family. You might say dysfunctional, but is any family really “functional”? With five siblings and 10 nieces and nephews, there will be plenty of people descending on casa del Marcia in the next day or so. I don’t have an exact count because some still haven’t committed (biting my tongue here), but the guesstimate is in the 20+ range.
Here’s the plan:
Plan the meal. Check
Shop for the meal. Check
Prep the meal as much in advance as possible, although I wish there were more I could do in advance.
If everybody trotted, maybe our Thanksgiving would look like this. Except no to the dress.Β
MOVE! When the cook is happy, everybody’s happy. That’s why I’m turkey trotting tomorrow. It’s a must.
Enlist help: Who am I kidding? There will be no help here but take it if you can get it.
Don’t starve yourself before the big meal.
Hydrate. Alcohol does’t count. What?
Breathe.
Focus on kindness. Peace. Tolerance. Because at the end of the day they’re all petty, first-world problems. Life is bountiful and we all have countless blessings to be thankful for.
When all else fails, a sense of humor is worth its weight in Yukon Gold potatoes.
And don’t forgetΒ Serve the damn whipped cream with the pie. That is of course if I actually get any.
Join me back here for a very special Black Friday edition of the Runfessions linkup. I’ve also got a mega giveaway you will not want to miss!
Happy Thanksgiving and thanks so much for hanging out with me here and being wonderful! What’s your gathering like? Favorite pie? Whipped cream or no?
I’m linking up with Deb for the Wednesday Word.

Best of luck hosting all those people! My family tried to trick me into hosting this year but I’m having nothing of it haha I did say that once we have kids we’ll take on more holidays but for now I’m pretending that I don’t know how to cook so everyone stays away.
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Oh man. Family. Our gathering should be relatively mellow. My youngest sister won’t be joining us, so there will be less walking on eggshells….
I love pretty much all pie except pumpkin. I’m weird. We just have to accept that. And no whipped cream.
Wendy @ Wholistic Woman says
whipped cream, of course! I’ve never hosted Thanksgiving – I’ve always gone to my grandmother’s, mom’s, or MILs. I do bring dishes to pass though. Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving!

Love this post! I need to make sure I get a run in tomorrow morning too. I am hosting! Good luck!

Yes, of YES, pumpkin pie with plenty of whipped cream. My husband insists that you do not have enough whipped cream if you can see the actual pie underneath. Truth. He is really good about helping with the turkey (hello? I’m NOT putting my hand in there…#eeew), and he’s a master carver when the turkey comes out of the oven. We’re trotting tomorrow as well, but it’s supposed to be raining. Fun. (trotting miles in the rain count double, BTW) π

I’m playing catchup today on my first day back from vacation! We were all all the store on Wednesday in Jacksonville. I only made one trip but some of the others were not so lucky! We prep as much as we can the night before. Chopping onions, mashing sweet potatoes, chopping nuts. Then on Thanksgiving, my excuse is I’ve got to get in my run. So I get to ditch some of the early morning cooking. We had more people than we usually do and no extra space so it was quite a challenge to even be in the kitchen. It all got cooked, well most of it, the mac n cheese was burned on top! But it did leave everyone in a turkey coma for the rest of the afternoon at least!
