I almost got arrested yesterday. I was taking Thing 1 to skating and we were approaching the ice rink (all I had to do was make a left turn into the parking lot. Except there was an accident just North of where I needed to turn in and if I’d gotten there 10 seconds earlier I could have. Except an emergency vehicle swooped in right in front of me and all the police arrived along with an ambulance, fire truck, the whole shebang blocking me from proceeding any further North. But that was ok since I didn’t want to go North anyway. I simply wanted to turn left into the parking lot. So when the cop started directing traffic and yelling at me to turn around, I simply motioned toward the parking lot and started turning left, which was in no way impeding the cars involved in the accident, the emergency equipment, etc.
This was mucho no bueno with the cop, who proceeded to yell at me repeatedly at the top of his lungs in the most sarcastic of tones to “TURN AROUND!!” The fact of the matter was I couldn’t turn around until 79 people behind me all backed up.
And what if I just went and made my left turn? Would he chase me? Jump up on my hood?? Taser? Oh the possibilities…but I digress.
So Mr. Rude Cop stood there blowing his stack as I waited for the people behind me to back up enough so we could all start turning around. Then I spent 15 minutes driving 2 miles back down the road, another mile over to the next road that headed North again toward the rink. All because a certain officer was a pissy, power-hungry asshat.
Exhale. There I feel better getting that out.
Remember that book The Secret? The one that talks about The Laws of Attraction? How you get what you get because you give off some vibes that attract it?
Ok so now I’m channeling kindness. I want to see it, I want to be it, and I want it to come reflecting back to me. If I don’t get arrested first, that is, cuz there’s probably a warrant out for me.
The #kindnessproject is gonna be my thing. I’ll report back with my findings. Wanna join me?
Have you ever ticked off a cop? Come close to getting arrested? Did you sign the petition to update the food pyramid? Read more about that here.ย
I’m linking up with the lovely Amanda for Thinking Out Loud Thursday.

Yep, give a guy a badge…I had that unpleasant encounter with Officer Sarcastic a few weeks ago when he pulled me over for talking on my phone. I’m so done with power hungry a**hats.
I cannot believe how many rude people I encounter at my job. I try to maintain kindness but I am challenged multiple times throughout the day. Like the mom today who was 10 minutes late for her son’s physical but told me to speed things up because she had somewhere to be…
Jill says
My guess is this cop got a head’s up from a few cops from the Twin Cities area….
Alexandra @ My Urban Family says
Ugh, I am not a fan of cops acting like that. I know there are good cops out there, but sometimes I think the power goes to their head. I probably would have pretended not to notice and kept going… haha
Mary Beth Jackson says
There is no reason for all of that! How rude to you, give a guy a badge. They must have interrupted his donut break! I was surprised at how rude the police were in Italy, I mean flat out rude, very disappointing. Kill them with kindness I say! Let’s do it!
Kelli says
That’s so frustrating!! I applaud you for turning it around and looking to spread kindness. We definitely need more of that. There are so many kind people around, but they can be overshadowed by all of the rudeness out there as well.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Oh my! I got stuck in a major backup yesterday — with no apparent cause. A sheriff drove past me on the shoulder at one point, but was nowhere to be seen by the time I finally made it to the light.
In fairness to the other drivers, no one zoomed up on the left lane & cut in — unheard of! That no one did it, of course.
I do believe in karma, but also that sometimes bad things happen to good people. For no reason.

I would have bailed you out when you took the left anyway! RUDE. One of my running buddies is a police captain and head of one of our precincts. (Yes, I’m so using that card when necessary!). Thankfully, she isn’t like that. I love the idea of your kindness project. PS. I smell strongly of chlorine after a 70 min pool run. Yes, I showered.
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I don’t think I ever pissed off a cop but luckily I haven’t had too many run ins with me! Whenever I am inconvenienced from an accident/emergency, etc, I always remind myself at least today it is not me or someone I love who is involved. I do tend to get angry at rude drivers, etc, and my husband is pretty good at calming me down!
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
I came close to getting arrested in college for trespassing on someone’s property….ahem, swimming in their pool in the middle of the night, lol.
Emily @ Out and About says
GRRRRR. I’ve had some similar encounters with people in uniform and it drives me nuts. TSA agents are the worst. They enforce things that are so nonsensical it makes me want to scream. I TOTALLY feel your pain. I am really, really sorry you had to go through that. What a jerk and what a complete waste of your time that guy created!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I give you credit for turning this situation around into a kindness project. I’m feeling like people are becoming ruder in general, and those in authority (like your friend with the badge) are even worst!
Annmarie says
Ugh, cops on a power trip are the worst! Seriously, I used to work for the police department and they can get a little out of control.
Carmy says
Eek. I cannot stand rudeness via power trips. There’s only so much within my power that I can do and being rude isn’t making it any easier!
Lisa @ RunWiki says
Sorry- yes, I’ve dealt with pissy cops before. This is a great way to shake it off– kill that dark feeling with kindness. HUGS!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
Sounds like the cop just wanted to assert his authority just because he could. Ugh!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Cops make me nervous…I just do what they say in the rare occasion I deal with them! I think we all could exercise more kindness in our lives. I definitely want to work on attracting more positivity!
Char says
I’m on board with that. But can I have a special dispensation card for one person who really, really, really annoys me and who I can’t be kind to apart from avoiding him altogether? No he’s not my husband. I can manage to be kind to him.
Abby @ BackAtSquareZero says
Oh my gosh so freaking frustrating. That would drive me nuts.
Shannon @GirlsGotSole says
It’s unfortunate that a few cops give most police a bad rap. Sounds like the guy either had a bad day, or he was just generally unhappy. Glad you didn’t get arrested!
Ariana says
Ooo sorry you had to deal with that! Since I moved to the city I haven’t had any issues with police officers, but when I used to live in a smaller town I got pulled over (for no reason) and was let go because I had a “pretty” clean driving record (it was completely clean). Haha.
Totally agree that what you give you get in return! Good luck with those acts of kindness ๐
Hollie says
OH dear! I think the cop needed some exercise to release some happy endorphins ๐
Betsy says
That’s no good. I try to stay below the radar when it comes to cops and getting arrested. lol
Janice @ Fitness Cheerleader says
I love this idea! I can’t say that I’ve ever had a run in quite like that with a cop before, though I do believe that there’s always more to every story and person than meets the eye. I’m sure there may very well be a legitimate reason behind his rudeness. There’s a really good video I saw on YouTube a few years ago, it’s set in a hospital lobby and it shows people coming and going, taking the elevator, pushing people in wheelchairs etc. Above every person’s head is a small bubble that shows the burdens each person bears both good news and bad news, ie: was just diagnosed with cancer, just found out they’re going to be a father, etc. That video really hit home and made me think twice about how I interact with every person I encounter as you can’t tell by looking at someone what they are really going through.

Can we have an exception for traffic? Or is that when it matters most? I’m trying …
